Welcome

I have been honoured to represent the people of Islington North and in taking their concerns and needs to Parliament. It is an honour and a privilege to have been re-elected so I can continue to represent such a vibrant and diverse constituency in the House of Commons.
Housing is the biggest issue facing our community and I will continue to push for more social housing. Affordable homes are now being built for local people to rent because the Labour Government is funding new building which will alleviate the stress and misery that results from poor quality homes. I am also actively taking up problems experienced by leaseholders and private tenants, in Parliament and elsewhere.
The National Health Service is the most enduring symbol of a civilised society. I am determined to ensure that it stays that way and that we continue with local improvements. I have raised the subject in Parliament endlessly, and more local doctors and improving health for all must be continued. The Whittington Hospital has had new investment for new wards and an excellent Accident and Emergency Department which is vital to our well being and safety. I will do everything to ensure our hospital’s future is secure.
MPs have to make tough decisions and I voted against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I want a world at peace and free from nuclear weapons, and I believe that diplomacy and international law are the best ways forward. Tough decisions are often needed and we all have to make these, notably when it comes to such things as the environment and civil liberties. MPs must be prepared to make a stand on what they and their constituents believe in. In the various roles I have held such as Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Human Rights, and membership of groups such as the Justice for Unions Group, my activities on very many issues are widespread.
Workers now have more employment rights, from the minimum wage to holiday entitlement and paternity/ maternity leave. “Sure Start” child centres are now a household word and they have transformed the early years of every child by bringing together early education, childcare, health and family support. The global financial crisis of 2008 led to the public ownership of the major banks, which I support. It has also resulted in an increase in debt. However, the most important thing is to maintain public spending on basic services such as health, education, housing, social security and care for the most vulnerable. Spending cuts can only mean more job losses and the danger of returning to recession. In the 1980s unemployment soared as a result of Tory policies. This Government has provided additional money for small businesses who may be struggling. My duty is to defend our services and jobs and not force the poorest to pay the price of the bankers’ excesses.
The great changes in our society, from votes for women, anti discrimination laws, support for the disabled, to education and health care, all came from ordinary people making demands through their Members of Parliament. Together we can continue to make Islington a Borough to be proud of.
