anti-us chamber of commerce

subverting our democracy.......one foreign donation at a time....
....all of these annual dues are collected in the same 501(c)(6) the chamber is using to run partisan attack ads. the data above reflects information from public sources, and the chamber likely has many more foreign corporations as dues-paying members — but refuses to divulge any of the funders for their ad campaign. unfortunately, many reporters in the traditional press covered the chamber story, but missed the entire point of our reporting. most reporters (from the new york times, mcclatchy, the associated press, etc.) never contacted thinkprogress, instead opting to only interview chamber officials. - think progress

Can Someone Please Translate This Sentence into English?

Words fail me as Lee Siegel, er, reasons:
The eventual assimilation of Beat hedonism ensured that by the end of the millennium, white middle-class Christians like him would themselves be marginalized — at least by the dominant culture — as the "silent majority."

Dear NYT: please sign me to Greg Mankiw's freelancer contract, since, if you pay me enough, I can probably learn how to write a sentence that idiotic. (The prolixity I already have down.)

why is today like a byrds song? because, to everything, 10, 10, 10, there is a season, 10, 10, 10

forgive the bad joke in the headline, but focus instead on the coincidentaly repetitive nature of today's date as a reminder to eliminate carbon production in our daily lives to help deter global warming. usatoady:
got plans sunday? why not throw a party -- one to fight global warming? a grassroots environmental group, 350.org., is helping to organize what it says will be more 7,000 events in 188 countries for the 10/10/10 global work party,

"dear world," begins an open letter by the group's founder bill mckibben, an environmentalist and author, on its website. mckibben, who recently tried to get president obama to re-install a jimmy carter-era solar panel on the white house, proposes everyone get involved. he writes:
it's been a tough year: in north america, oil gushing into the gulf of mexico; in asia some of the highest temperatures ever recorded; in the arctic, the fastest melting of sea ice ever seen; in latin america, record rainfalls washing away whole mountainsides.

so we're having a party.

...in auckland, new zealand, they're having a giant bike fix-up day, to get every bicycle in the city back on the road. in the maldives, they're putting up solar panels on the president's office. in kampala, uganda, they're going to plant thousands of trees, and in bolivia they're installing solar stoves for a massive carbon neutral picnic.
for a list of places holding celebrations today, go to the 350.org website.

the environmental news service further informs us:
as of april 2010, the co2 concentration level was 392 parts per million. carbon dioxide and other gases blanket the earth in the greenhouse effect, blocking the planet's natural ability to radiate the sun's heat back out into space.

"politicians may still be debating climate change, but citizens are getting to work solving it," said bill mckibben, environmental author and founder of 350.org...

"in the same year when global temperatures have set one scary new record after another, you are rewriting the record books for civic engagement," mckibben said this week. "we don't have the final numbers yet because registrations are still streaming in, but it's clear that we're on track to shoot past 7,000 events in 188 countries."

"that leaves four countries unaccounted for: north korea, andorra, equatorial guinea, and san marino," he said. "barring those, the entire planet is engaged. which makes sense, since this is the first issue that involves the entire planet."

in the united states, over 1,200 events are planned, from atlanta parishioners weatherizing their church to a hip-hop show at a community garden in oakland.

in china and india, over 300 universities will join 10/10/10 as part of the great power race, a student clean energy competition.

in afghanistan, students will be planting hundreds of trees in a valley outside of kabul.

in congo, refugees will be planting a "forest of hope" outside of goma, home to thousands of refugees from regional conflicts.

in indonesia, 10 bike communities in bandung city will plant 10 trees at each of 10 city parks.

in hungary, at 10 am footballers kick off the climate soccer match, olympic sportsmen vs. a team of climate change scientists.

in russia and croatia, organizers have signed up nearly 10,000 schools to plant trees on sunday.

in germany, people can get on the couch for some carbon cutting advice. the couch will be in berlin on sunday, traveling through the city offering low carbon advice to everyone on its way to the brandenberg gate.

in zimbabwe, the cool carbon club in harare has invited everyone to help clean up two cycle paths in the city.

mckibben asks that people take photos of their events to "show politicians and the media that people around the world aren't just ready for climate solutions - we're getting to work building them."

email photos to photos@350.org. put your city and country in the subject line, and put a short description of your event in the body of the email. mckibben says please try to get a "350" in your photo. "it's our universal message knitting this whole thing together. and if you can get a photo that shows how people are getting to work on climate solutions, even better."
more fun w/the number 10 and global warming reduction includes the 10/10 project in england, where the organizers hope to convince the population of that country to reduce their carbon intake by 10% in 2010.

here's a great video that gave the hardly-ever-right wing the vapors because it actually dared to be funny:

the outcry against the video was so loud, the people responsible were forced to remove it from the 10:10 website.

too bad. it's directed by richard "four weddings and a funeral" curtis, and is in the grand english humor tradition of the goonies, python, mitchell and webb, little britain, et. al.

apparently grossly exaggerated cartoon violence in the manner of monty python is over the line for the delicate sensibilities of those who advocate torture of captured muslims.

but in other, happier 10/10/10 news, reservations for reno weddings are higher for today than ever:
sunday is not normally a busy day, saturday is typically your busy day,” she said. but on a day with multiple numbers, “it’s just like valentine’s day. it’s a magic day.”

margaret flint, whose family owns chapel of the bells, said 10-10-10 will be especially busy because it falls on a sunday, and for some couples from out of state it may be a three-day weekend with columbus day on monday.

“anytime you get days like that, they’re lucky number days, easy to remember, a novelty — 7-7-7 was huge. that fell on a saturday,” she said.

flint estimated they’ll have at least triple the business they’d have on a normal sunday.

“we’re looking forward to this,” she said. “we’ll be carrying a full staff. people will be working their days off this sunday.”

to accommodate the wedding rush, the marriage license bureau in the district court house at 75 court st. will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight rather than normal 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. sunday hours.

flint, who is also a candidate for county clerk, said she hopes there will also be extended hours on jan. 1, 2011 — that date falls on a saturday.
and, we assume, for 11/11/11, and 12/12/12, which falls only a couple of weeks before the end of the world.

someone isn't "beeing" honest

about where funding for a study on bee deaths came from.

a cheer must have gone up at bayer on thursday when a front-page new york times article, under the headline "scientists and soldiers solve a bee mystery," described how a newly released study pinpoints a different cause for the die-off: "a fungus tag-teaming with a virus." the study, written in collaboration with army scientists at the edgewood chemical biological center outside baltimore, analyzed the proteins of afflicted bees using a new army software system. the bayer pesticides, however, go unmentioned.

what the times article did not explore -- nor did the study disclose -- was the relationship between the study's lead author, montana bee researcher dr. jerry bromenshenk, and bayer crop science. in recent years bromenshenk has received a significant research grant from bayer to study bee pollination. indeed, before receiving the bayer funding, bromenshenk was lined up on the opposite side: he had signed on to serve as an expert witness for beekeepers who brought a class-action lawsuit against bayer in 2003. he then dropped out and received the grant. - fortune

the governator hates poor and sick californians

and would rather have them suffer than slightly raise taxes on those who can afford multimillion dollar multiple homes and yachts. our state, our country is only as strong as the least among us. we are weakening our democracy out of existence.
gov. arnold schwarzenegger on friday vetoed nearly $1 billion in spending on welfare, child care, special education and other programs before signing the budget bill that lawmakers had passed about eight hours earlier after a marathon overnight session.

the governor slashed 23 line items from the $87.5-billion general fund budget, including $256 million from a program for school-age children of families moving off welfare, $133 million from mental health services for special education students and nearly $60 million from aids treatment and prevention programs. - latimes

help for me, but not for thee

teabagger joe miller, who is running for senator from alaska, has repeatedly opined that such things as medicare and unemployment are unconstitutional. except that he himself has been the recipient of same in the past. think progress:
alaska gop senate candidate joe miller has repeatedly claimed that federal health care benefits violate the constitution. it turns out, however, that “mr. noun, verb, and unconstitutional” doesn’t actually think that the constitution applies to himself. yesterday, miller acknowledged that the received the very same kind of federally funded health care benefits that he believes to be unconstitutional:
u.s. senate candidate joe miller acknowledged thursday that in the past his family received assistance from federal medicaid and denali kidcare, the state low income health care program. his opponents in the race responded that he’s a hypocrite for taking assistance while now saying federal entitlement programs are unconstitutional.
...

and miller isn’t just a hypocrite, he also has no idea what he is talking about. had miller actually bothered to read the constitution, he would know that congress has the power to “to lay and collect taxes” and to “provide for the . . . general welfare of the united states.” federal health care programs such as medicare and medicaid clearly fit within this power to raise revenue and spend it to benefit the nation at large. additionally, miller’s proposal for a state takeover of federal entitlement programs is economically impossible unless america forbids its citizens from retiring in a different state than the one that they paid taxes in while working.

there is one thing that’s clear from miller’s actions, however. he is perfectly happy to leave millions of other people helpless against the twin dragons of poverty and disease, but there is no way that he is going to follow his own draconian rules.
this is only another in a series of obviously hypocritical positions miller has staked out. previously it was discovered that his wife collected unemployment (which miller declares 'unconstitutional') after he 'fired' her as his secretary.

and miller has stated that he'd repeal the 17th amendment - which provides for the public elections of senators - which is the same legal instrument that allows him to run for job he's currently seeking.

two-face much, mr. miller?

get unhealthy on your own dime

this won't be the first time we have disagreed w/shakesville on something:
new york mayor and "anti-obesity" crusader michael bloomberg is asking the federal government for permission "to bar new york city's 1.7 million recipients of food stamps from using them to buy soda or other sugared drinks."
the request, made to the united states department of agriculture, which finances and sets the rules for the food-stamp program, is part of an aggressive anti-obesity push by the mayor that has also included advertisements, stricter rules on food sold in schools and an unsuccessful attempt to have the state impose a tax on the sugared drinks.
...the mayor requested a ban for two years to study whether it would have a positive impact on health and whether a permanent ban would be merited.

"in spite of the great gains we've made over the past eight years in making our communities healthier, there are still two areas where we're losing ground — obesity and diabetes," the mayor said in a statement. "this initiative will give new york families more money to spend on foods and drinks that provide real nourishment."
okay, so here's the thing: stigmatizing food stamp recipients by suggesting they're too stupid to make the right decisions about what food they should be purchasing is not a good idea for reasons that ought to be self-evident. but supposing, for a moment, that this proposal wasn't embedded with patronizing classist horseshit and a heap of fat hatred, there still remain reasons to question the potential efficacy of this proposal, and its very design.

why, for example, is the usda being petitioned to allow an infringement on the autonomous decision-making of poor usians, instead of petitioned to ban the use of high-fructose corn syrup in all the foods and beverages purchased by those poor usians (and everyone else)? given that researchers have found that hfcs prompts considerably more weight gain, and that the average usian's consumption of hfcs over the same time period associated with the oh noes obesity and diabetes crisis has increased by "an alarming 12,250%," you'd think that the mayor and usda might want to start there and see if "a ban for two years [has] a positive impact on health."
uh, strawman much, melissa?

we don't think the mayor of new york would be in much of a position of authority to ask to ban the use of high-fructose corn syrup in foods. we think he's perfectly within his purview to ask to keep soda purchases from eligibility of food stamp purchase in his city.

we're all in favor of the food stamp program. skippy once was on food stamps in his younger years, and it's a subsidy that works, and is necessary.

but you know what's not necessary? mountain dew. milk, eggs, hamburger, broccoli, that stuff's necessary. sprite, pepsi, mr. pibb, coke zero, not so much.

we hate to even begin to sound authortarian, but it makes great sense to us to ask that the government not be asked to foot the bill for soda. food stamps should be for staying alive, not for belching contests.

now, we're not, as melissa's post implies, demanding that people on food stamps be restricted from drinking sodas. we are just demanding that if they want to, they pay for it themselves.

if you can't afford to buy a delicious carbonated lemon-lime drink, then don't make 7
up yours.

my candidate, das williams, gets another strong endorsement

the santa barbara Independent has endorsed das for state assembly on the November ballot.

few santa barbara politicians come as prepared, equipped, and temperamentally suited to serve in sacramento as das williams, the politically restless progressive now holding down the left end of the santa barbara city council. williams is both pragmatist and ideologue, meaning he can grandstand with the best of them but also get things done. With local roots running deep, williams will remain accessible once ensconced in the weird twilight zone of sacramento. constituent calls will be returned; their issues, addressed. the same cannot be said for the recent occupant of that seat.

bewitched, bozo'd and bewildered

christine o'donnell is a lot of things. but she's not a witch, she says:

i'm not a witch," delaware senate candidate christine o'donnell assures voters, who may be concerned that she once "dabbled" in the dark arts, in a new ad released by her campaign on monday.

"i'm nothing you've heard," o'donnell continues in the 30-second spot -- the first of the general election -- "i'm you."

the ad features a spare background, quiet piano notes and o’donnell, the gop candidate who has sparked controversy for her past statements on witchcraft, abstinence and evolution, among other things, speaking directly into the camera.

but apparently she is one of a long line of bozos:
as mark leibovich at the new york times reports, the o'donnell family's past claims that her father daniel o'donnell had worked as bozo sparked an uprising of online commenters who insisted that no, daniel o'donnell was not listed on wikipedia as having been one of the many regionally licensed bozo the clown tv hosts.

[tpm slideshow: christine o'donnell: anti-masturbation crusader. witchcraft dabbler. republican senate nominee.]

but now leibovich has sorted things out -- daniel o'donnell was an occasional understudy bozo, not a full-time holder of the bozo mantle. from their phone conversation:
"who told you i was bozo?" he wanted to know.

"your son," i said, at which point he confirmed that yes, he was bozo, but not an official, full-time certified bozo, more of a part-time bozo.

"to be an official bozo, you had to go to a special school in texas," explained mr. o'donnell. he never did. instead, he was asked to fill-in for the official bozos whenever they would have to travel out of the philadelphia area for acting gigs.
part-time bozo? that was a great song.
