What We Missed

It’s the first day of GLSEN’s Ally Week. Take the pledge to support LGBT youth against bullying and harassment.

A new study shows that in England and Wales, black people are 26 times more likely than white people to be stopped and searched by the police.

Holy shit, are we going to have an intense Mad Men Midweek Fix this week. In the meantime, Amanda, Kay and Sarah Seltzer at RH Reality Check have thoughts, and Stephanie Coontz on WaPo says Mad Men is TV’s most feminist show around.

Another porn performer has been tested HIV-positive, resparking the call for condoms in the porn industry.

Quick Hit: Another Contest for Women Writers ISO Funding

In the interest of continuing the conversation about how women writers can monetize their writing, I wanted to pass along another contest. Via the website of Narrative:

We are looking for works with a strong narrative drive, with characters we can respond to as human beings, and with effects of language, situation, and insight that are intense and total. We look for works that have the ambition of enlarging our view of ourselves and the world.

Awards: First Prize is $3,250, Second Prize is $1,500, Third Prize is $750, and ten finalists will receive $100 each. All entries will be considered for publication.

This contest is for fiction and non-fiction writers and the deadline is November 30, 2010. So you have got plenty of time. Happy submissions and feel free to use this as a thread to discuss what you are applying for that will enable you to have the kind of writing time that lends itself to thorough revisions, thought processes and great ideas.

Black Marriage Negotiations Video Perpetuates Stereotypes and Ignores Context

The “Black Marriage Negotiations” video has been making it’s rounds on Facebook walls and on Essence’s blog. It has grossed nearly 200,000 hits on YouTube after going viral late last week. It was created by an anonymous user at Xtranormal.com, a site that boasts, “If you can type, you can make movies.”

If only the bar wasn’t so low.  The video isn’t just bunk because it misuses the term “womanist,” a label meant to convey that black women’s emancipation cannot be achieved without black men and children also being fully equal in society. Simply stated, it’s another baseless attack on educated, professional, single, African American women who seek healthy partnerships with men.  There are so many stereotypes about black women that this video affirms without  providing any context, but perhaps the ones that sting the most are about sex and money.

Starting with the latter, it is really hard for me to believe that black women, the same women who are least likely to marry a college educated spouse want someone to “pay all of the bills… and  pay for every dinner and date we go on.” But if we provide more of a context for Black women, it’s not hard to see why some may want their male counterparts picking up the tab every now and again. Recent data compiled by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research reveal that although black men make significantly less than white men, they still make more than black women. Yes, there may be some variation among women when it comes to the dinner tab question, but I don’t think it is completely unreasonable for black women who make less than their male counterparts to expect them to pay for more during the courting process.

Thousands of DR Congo women march against sexual violence

congo rally
Pic via BBC.

Yesterday, thousands of women in the Democratic Republic of Congo marched through the town of Bukavu with signs and slogans saying, “No to sexual terrorism.” The first lady led the rally in a statement to fight the continuing thousands of rapes occurring across the war-torn nation.

This comes a month after a top official at the United Nations said the UN had “failed” the rape survivors that could have been protected better in the midst of this epidemic. On Friday, the head of the UN mission there estimated that over 15,000 people have been raped there in 2009. More on the organizers and ralliers:

“Coming here is important because violence towards women is used systematically as a weapon of war,” said Miriam Nobre of World March of Women, which organised the march.

Nene Rukunghu, a doctor at a hospital in Bukavu, said the international community finally seemed interested in DR Congo’s problems.

“We must fight against impunity, so that the perpetrators of violence are punished, to allow women to regain their dignity. Despite what they endure, Congolese women are strong and able to stand up again.”

More ridiculousness from Ken Buck: Being gay is like having alcoholism

ken buckWell, ain’t this special.

Last week, we learned that Colorado Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck dismissed a rape charge as a “case of buyer’s remorse” back in 2005. Now it looks like ole Buckaroo seems to be harping on offensive comparisons, this time by likening homosexuality with alcoholism.  Via Steve Benen:

[O]n NBC’s “Meet the Press,” viewers got another opportunity to get to know Buck. Host David Gregory noted to the GOP challenger, “In a debate last month, you expressed your support for Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell [and] you alluded to ‘lifestyle choices.’ Do you believe being gay say choice?”

Buck replied, “I do.” Gregory followed up, asking, “Based on what?” After initially pretending not to understand the question, Buck added, “I guess you can choose who your partner is.”

Let’s pause to note that Buck, if elected, wouldn’t exactly be one of the towering intellects of the United States Senate.

Before moving on, Gregory pressed further, asking, “You don’t think it’s something that’s determined at birth?” Buck replied, “I think that birth has an influence over it, like alcoholism and some other things, but I think that basically you have a choice.” (Emphasis mine)

The hits just keep on comin’. Next time with Ken Buck: Abortion is like slavery. Oh right, Rick Santorum and Sam Brownback already have that one.
