Judge Dismisses Cases Against Military Veterans and Anti-war Activists Following December 16th Washington, D.C. Arrests

Washington, D.C. – January 4, 2011: Anti-war military veterans and other activists celebrated a breakthrough victory today in DC Superior Court, when charges were dropped, following arrests in front of the White House, on December 16, 2010. Over 131 people were arrested in a major veteran-led protest while participating in non-violent civil resistance in a driving snowstorm. US Park Police charged all 131 protesters with “Failure to Obey a Lawful Order,” when they refused to move from the White House sidewalk. All remained fixed to the White House fence demanding an end to the continuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and further US aggression in the region.

Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, with leadership from the Seattle Raging Grannies will celebrate Dr. King's birthday on Saturday, January 15, 2011 with a full day of events including a vigil and nonviolent action at the gates of the Bangor Trident nuclear submarine base in Kitsap County, Washington.

The Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign purchased ad space on 12 King County Metro Transit buses for a month.  The proposed ads Israeli War Crimes Your Tax Dollars At Work.") linked Israeli War Crimes to the $30 Billion of foreign aid the U.S. gives to Israel each year. Ed Mast, a spokesman for the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign, has said the ads were meant to get people talking about Mideast peace issues, not as an anti-Israel statement. Under intense national pressure, King County Executive Dow Constantine cancelled the bus ads.  A spokesman for the county justified the action by asserting that if the ads ran, pro-Israeli demonstrators might disrupt transit service or vandalize buses.

MLK Day: 5th Annual "Redeeming the Prophetic Vision" Interfaith Service in Tacoma

On Sunday, January 16th, the 5th Annual "Redeeming the Prophetic Vision" Martin Luther King Interfaith Service will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 at the Urban Grace Church -- The Downtown Church  located at 902 Market Street, Tacoma, WA 98402.  A reception will follow the MLK Day event.

Four varied faith traditions will be represented, with varied blessings.  Rev. Tad Monroe of Urban Grace Church will welcome the event.  On this, the fifth year of the event, Dr. Dexter Gordon, keynote speaker, will present an open letter to Obama: “What Do We Do Now Given the Context We Are In”.  An awards ceremony for civil rights leadership, called the Civil Rights Honor Roll, will again present five local people with acknowledgement for at least ten years each of varied continuous activities in Tacoma.

Two years ago, on December 27, 2008, Israel launched a military attack on the civilian population of Gaza, killing over 1400 Palestinians. Two years later, Gaza is still in ruins. Seattle activists marched through downtown Seattle, stopping to read accounts of the attack.
