Artwork no4

I am an impulse buyer. I am not what someone would call a sensible shopper. I see, and if I want, I buy (within a reason). It is as simple and as scary as that. My latest impulse buy is the image above, which is an A4 sized pencil drawing by Edinburgh based graffiti artist/illustrator Elph. And now I will be eating porridge and pasta with red sauce for a while to offset the cost. But the drawing is pretty, right? Totally justifies the carbfest. Yes? Well, I think so.

I first met Elph little over two years ago when he was doing his bit for the graffiti wall that is at kelvinbridge underground station in Glasgow. Just a couple of months before that I had seen his stuff at Kelburn castle and really liked it. Ever since then I have wanted to own something he has created. When I saw the drawing of a girl holding a camera yesterday afternoon I just knew that I had to have it.

How lucky (or unlucky, just depends how you look at it) for me Elph had an exhibition opening at
Recoat gallery with other artist called Lyckenlove last night. I went, had a chat with Elph, had 2 beers and ooops, I had bought the drawing without even seeing it properly.

I went to pick it up today and I absolutely love it.

That porridge is going to taste sweet...

One day this blog will have some regular content *sigh*

Adam
Harry Potter & The Halfblood Prince
The Hungover
The Ugly Truth
I Love You Beth Cooper

Eagle eyed readers may notice that I had already seen two of above films in July; Harry Potter and The Hangover (I'd definitely go see that film, twice). The difference is that in August I saw them in Finland with subtitles in Finnish and Swedish. And because I didn't have a hangover while watching Harry Potter (this is getting confusing) I didn't fall asleep and it all made that much more sense. And when I watched Hangover for the second time I could be the freak laughing out loud few seconds before everyone else. And that is always good.

Anyway, Adam. I really liked Adam. I found it hard to watch at times as it made a good attempt at showing how people treat others that are slightly different. There was one thing I found hard to understand though; how is it possible for socially challenged man who has lived with his father for 20 years to have as good dress sense as Adam did? Yes, I'm sometimes easily distracted in cinema.

Which makes a good link to I love you Beth Cooper. How big was that guy's nose? The boy with loads of love for Beth must have been adopted as his parents didn't possess such an impressive nose. He also looked almost the same age as his parents. I found this film difficult to watch too, but for totally different reasons. I stayed until the end though as I wantd to see if it could get any worse. And what do you know, it did.

I also saw The Ugly Truth but the less is said about that one, the better.

Captain Kirk's nipples! aka Films in July '09

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee
Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince
Moon
Iceage III
The Land of The Lost
Coco Before Channel

There is only one winner this month and it is definitely Moon. I really did love it. Maybe too much as there isn't a lot of love left for the other films I saw in July. Ah well, I couldn't look away from the screen, I felt for the main character, there was a plot, it made sense, you want to know what happens... A film I'll definitely want to see again one day.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee wasn't too bad. It took me a while to get into the style of it. It was really slow. Some things felt irrelevant. Some things felt unbelievable. Some things hit home.

I think I had seen only two Harry Potter films before. That didn't matter though as nothing happens in The Half Blooded Prince. I was feeling a bit worse to wear when I went to see (ok, I felt like I was dying) and after snoozing some of the beginning I did feel a lot better so I suppose I can't complain a lot. The film is really long, too long for what actually happens in it. There were a lot of oohs and awwws made by what I suppose were hardcore harry potter lovers. I must admit that I was not feeling that love.

I hadn't followed the storyline of Iceage either but somehow again it didn't matter. The film was boring. Ok, ok, it is for kids but I like kids films. Even Simon Pegg didn't keep me entertained.

I went to see two films today: The Land of The Lost and Coco Before Channel. I managed to lol once during The Land of The Lost. It was a really slow starter for me but luckily it picked up towards the end and there could have been a few smiles too.

Coco Before Channel had really fast subtitles but luckily it was also audio described by the granny sitting behind me so I definitely knew what was happening at all times. The film was ok. Nothing spectacular. You have to admire Coco's drive and determination though. And Audrey Tautou was pretty as anything in it.

I still haven't decided if I'll go see Antichrist or not. Away to Finland for two weeks in August too (and my third 'proper' job starts in 3 weeks) so probably won't get to sit that many hours in the cinema. I get to sit in sauna though (in Finland, not in my job). I win.
