Art of the Cover - VA "The Best of 2 Tone" (2014)

A wonderful monochrome cover - featuring the 2 Tone label icon - adorns this great new double-CD collection.

To celebrate the music and cultural movement that the 2 Tone label helped inspire, Parlophone has created a new compilation that brings together the best tracks from the label's history.

The Best of 2 Tone features 18 tracks, including the first single from Madness ("The Prince"), the Beat's classic cover of Smokey Robinson's "Tears Of A Clown," and Bodysnatchers' "People Do Rocksteady," plus three more songs by The Selecter: "On My Radio," "Three Minute Hero" and "Missing Words."

Half of the album features some of the great tracks recorded by the band that became the leaders of the Ska revival scene in the late '70s, The Special AKA, which was shortened later to The Specials.

Along with "Gangsters," the collection also includes both of the band's U.K. #1's - "Too Much Too Young" (1980) and "Ghost Town" (1981) - as well as several Top 10 songs: "A Message To You, Rudy," "Rat Race," "Stereotype," "Do Nothing," and "Free Nelson Mandela."

The door is locked, just you and me

Mirror in the bathroom
please talk free.
The door is locked,
just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
that's got glass tables?
You can watch yourself
while you are eating.

Cures You Whisper Make No Sense

Mirror in the bathroom.
Recompense
for all my crimes
of self defence.
Cures you whisper
make no sense.
Drift gently into
mental illness.

Great work mate! Nice to hear this fantastic and innovative group again and nice to hear these versions of the songs we love!

http://www.theweathermen.com/acatalog/thm_ska_beatgirl_white.jpgFor those unfamiliar with this top group, here are a few details! The Beat (strangely, known in North America as The English Beat) is a 2 Tone ska revival band founded in England in 1978. Their songs fuse ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock and their lyrics deal with themes of love, unity and sociopolitical topics.

The Beat released three great albums: I Just Can't Stop It (1980), Wha'ppen (1981) and Special Beat Service (1982), and a string of singles, including "Mirror in the Bathroom", "Stand Down Margaret" (which refers to former British Prime Minister and cunt supreme, Margaret Thatcher), " Too Nice To Talk To", and "Hands off She's Mine".

The Beat in 1981The Beat was formed in Birmingham, England in 1978, during a period of high unemployment and social upheaval in the United Kingdom.

Ranking Roger, one of the band's vocalists, added a Jamaican vocal flavor to the band's sound with his toasting style. Jamaican saxophonist Saxa (Lionel Martin aka Papa Saxa) added a Jamaican ska instrumental sound.

The Beat toured the world with well-known artists such as David Bowie, The Police, REM, The Clash, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, and The Specials. Members of the band often collaborated on stage with The Specials.

After the break-up of The Beat in 1983, Dave Wakeling (guitar, vocals) and Ranking Roger (vocals) went on to form General Public, while Andy Cox (guitar) and David Steele (bass guitar) formed Fine Young Cannibals with vocalist Roland Gift. Ranking Roger also briefly joined Mick Jones' post-Clash band Big Audio Dynamite and performed at several live shows with the band.
