Art of the Cover - Jesu & Sun Kil Moon's "Jesu / Sun Kil Moon" (2016)

Cuddly Koz is back! Yap, with probably the first of a dozen new albums this year, here under his Sun Kil Moon moniker, he collabs with Brit experimental act Jesu.

The LP dropped January 21, 2016 on Koz's Caldo Verde Records and Rough Trade.

The album also features an array of stellar indie guest .. the likes of Will Oldham aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy, members of Low, Rachel Goswell of Slowdive and Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. Jesu as well as Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth.

The album has come from the long-standing relationship between Jesu front man Justin Broadrick and Mark Kozelek.

Koz first approached Broadrick in 2007, about a release through his label, after being impressed by a live performance in San Francisco. In 2009 Jesu released Opiate Sun through Caldo Verde Records and later the same year Broadrick interviewed Kozelek for the Caldo Verde website. 

In 2013, Kozelek covered Broadrick's band Godflesh's song "Like Rats" and in 2014 directly referenced Broadrick and Godflesh in "The Possum"; the opening track from Sun Kil Moon's 2015 album Universal Themes.

Art of the Cover - Rivulets' "I Remember Everything" (2014)

Smokinnng!!!!!!!

An appropriately minimalist cover adorns this fine new collection of minimalist gems.

For 15 years, Nathan Amundson has performed under the name Rivulets producing minimalist Slowcore meets American mini-dramas with Red House Painters flair.

"I Remember Everything" - the fifth Rivulets album - was released by Jellyfant Records.

I've known Nathan for many years and we've played shows and made records together, so I know his thing - hushed, reaching vocals weaving an often melancholic impression over sparse guitar and ambient backdrop.  

As the opening song ("Reinforced/Delicate") stumbles in, carrying that familiar weight, I thought I knew what was coming, but I was wrong. By the first two lines of "Into the Night", the second song, I had to sit down because if the rest of the record was going to be like this, I knew I wanted to be there with it.  

To my delight, it did not let up - every song a relentless epiphany, the ragged edge of emotional, even physical, abandon. Timeless songs like "My Favorite Drug is Sleep" and "I was Once a Handsome Man" careen into the more artful/obtuse textures even thru the sprawling electric tribute of "Ride on, Molina." This is what happens when someone with a truly unique vision sticks to their guns and proves it.

Art of the Cover - Luluc's 'Passerby' (2014)

Another gratuitous pussy shot!

Gorgeous artwork adorns this delicious collection from the Australian/Brooklyn band.

Some may know Luluc from the National's ATP line-up or from last year's Nick Drake tribute, but they have kept such a low profile since their wonderful debut Dear Hamlyn came out in 2008. 

This second album is released by Sub Pop, produced by Aaron Dessner from the National and contains a selection of lovely yet mostly melancholic, Nick Drake-influenced songs. 

Passerby is Luluc's first international release. Co-produced by the band and The National's Aaron Dessner, the album shows off all of Luluc's best qualities, retaining the gentle beauty of the duo's debut while adding textures built with a cadre of impressive players. 

Echoes of Simon and Garfunkel and Gillian Welch can be felt throughout Passerby, while the poignant restraint aligns them well with label mates Low.

A gorgeous collection.

The Music - UNCUT Magazine's 'Best Albums Of 2011' List

 



Another December, yet another year-end list! This one from the Music Mag I like best, Britland's Uncut, with a list where challenging and adventurous music cosily coexists alongside more traditional type sounds (plus shit from the likes of Björk and The Decemberists!)

The magazine’s album of the year, it turns out, is PJ Harvey’s Mercury winner Let England Shake, a crock that - like most of Peej's outings since "Stories from the City ..." - I found really hard to listen to.  

Nevertheless, quite a few good uns in there including three of my real faves this year, from the Texas troubadour Josh T. Pearson, the always weird and wonderful Bill Callahan and idiosyncratic scottish laddies King Creosote & Jon Hopkins.

The Video - Low's “Try To Sleep”

You stretch your wings. You take a breath. You hide your feet, embrace your head. A tragedy. No, there's never enough. You try to sleep but then you never wake up.

Weird one this! Yap, Low's new vid for “Try To Sleep”, the lead single from the band's fine new album "C'Mon" which dropped this week. A gorgeous postmodern minimalist dark enigmatic lullaby that's as addictive as crack cocaine off a pornstar's back! (so Chuck Sheen tells me, anyway!) A song of lovely haikuesque poetry ("You try to sleep 'cause there's never enough") over a delicious melody and beautiful strings!

The 'high concept' video, directed by Travis Schneideroes, very incongruously features, erm ... John Stamos - apparently a big Low fan!

Yap, Stamos is exactly what I think of when considering the mighty, moody, minimalist work of the Minnesotans who have spent two decades crafting sublime, nay sumptuous, idiosyncratic soundscapes and evocative narratives of heartbreak, pain and loss!

Well, does it work? Not sure. But certainly not as bad as I'd feared! And the chick is damn hot!! ... Plus, at least it will help bring a new audience to this great group.

Stamos had this to say about Low to some mag recently:

I’m actually good friends with their producer Matt Beckley, and he had played me some of the record while they we’re making it, which I loved. Ironically it turns out I was a big fan of one of their older songs “Cue the Strings”… I’m a sucker for a well written song with great harmonies, and when it came time for them to cast the video, they asked if I’d like to be involved, I liked the concept I was happy to be a part of it. The new record is on all the time at my place. One of my favorite indie bands.

So listen up kids! Stamos loves the sh*t out of this album, so you should too! Grab it TODAYYYY!!!

The Cover - Low & Dirty Three do " Down By the River"

She could drag me over the rainbow, send me away. Down by the river, I shot my baby. Down by the river, Dead, oh, shot her dead.

Low and The Dirty Three recorded a beautiful, extended, meditative, post-modern version of Neil's great "Down By the River" for the 'In The Fishtank' mini album back in 1999. It's a CD well worth checking out.

"Down by the River" first appeared on Neil's 1969 album with Crazy Horse, "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere."

It's a wonderful and ambiguous song. Murder Ballad or Paean to Heroin? - you decide!

Here, Low and Mick Turner of the Dirty Three do a beautiful cover -  but the clip is all too brief. Sob! Sob!

The vid comes from Low's third show in a row at the East Brunswick Club, Melbourne as part of the 'Don't Look Back' concert series. Their album of choice was the great 'Things We Lost In The Fire', although this particular night was just a regular gig.

Mick Turner was the support act each night, and it's great to see him on stage with the band knocking out this Neil Young number.
