Nature notes
Most moths come out at night and are mostly seen by moth enthusiasts who trap them in their garden. However, a regular day-flying moth that can now be seen on flowers almost anywhere in Britain is the silver Y moth. It is grey and brown with a distinct silver Y-shape in the middle of each forewing. It flies very fast. Some of these moths are residents here, but many more immigrants are now coming in, and they sometimes appear in clouds of thousands along the coast. A butterfly that is now coming on the wing is the ringlet. These are a very dark brown, with just a few small inconspicuous spots. They have an attractive lilting flight and seem to dance along hedgerows and the edges of woods. The female sometimes scatters her eggs as she flies over the grasses on which the caterpillars will subsequently feed.
