Chile turns to Britain in hope of strong alliance

President Piñera of Chile will arrive in Britain this afternoon hoping to forge a strong relationship with the United Kingdom after this week’s sensational rescue of 33 miners trapped half a mile beneath the Atacama desert. In an exclusive interview with The Times, he said that the rescue had transformed Chile’s image abroad and urged the West to view a country long associated with the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet in a fresh light. The Harvard-educated billionaire revealed that he was bringing gifts of rock from the bottom of the mine for David Cameron and the Queen, who invited him to Buckingham Palace after watching Tuesday’s dramatic rescue.
