Welcome to the web site of the Free Range Network

The Free Range Network is a "disorganisation" – a group with no structure, no formal membership, and no formal presence. Ultimately free range is a concept of disassociated action; grassroots activists working together on matters of common concern, sharing resources and expertise towards a greater common goal.

The Free Range Activism Website (FRAW) has, since 1996, been the home of the Free Range Network's virtual presence. Here you'll find the documentation from the various projects run by groups within the network, information about forthcoming events, and collections of links and resources on a whole range related issues.

Free Range Projects

The Energy Beyond Oil Project
The EBO project looks at energy futures and sustainable lifestyles. It encompasses the issue of peak energy (peak oil, gas, coal and uranium) as well as work around the evolving themes of:
• 'Less', reducing consumption to meet the problems our future energy supply and climate change;
• 'Energy and Food', looking at how we produce and consume the most critical human energy resource; and
• the 'Great Outdoors', a new initiative developing the skills for simple living through learning to camp.


The Community-Linux Training Centre Project
This is the free software training side of the Network's activity on free and free software. Originally a touring Gnu/Linux training platform, the CLTC has now evolved into a project to encourage the use of free software through community-based training events.

The Salvage Server Project
This is the systems and hardware side of the Network's efforts on free software. The project was an off-shoot of the CLTC project but now works at the more 'geeky' end of the issue – experimenting with hardware, operating systems, networks and the electronics that are required to make these things work.

the electrohippie collective
electrohippies was an idea that grew into a campaign around the Seattle conference protests in 1999, but has since retired into obscurity because of all the unwanted attention it received in the media. Now it focusses on the use of technology by activists, mainly through organising workshops and quietly assisting 'behind the scenes' of other campaigns. Their main work at the moment is the 'Simple' campaign and the 'Browser Alert' campaign.
