Welcome to the website of the Society for the Study of Labour History. Founded in 1960, the Society is the UK's principal organisation dedicated to the study of labour history. The Society organises meetings and conferences, represents the interests of labour history and labour historians in a number of fora and publishes the highly-regarded journal Labour History Review.

Membership is open to everyone interested in the field of Labour History. In addition to LHR, individual members receive among other things regular newsletters and advance notice of all Society conferences. Join here.

Three Great Reasons to be a member of the SSLH in 2010:

  • To celebrate fifty years of the Society for the Study of Labour History, all members of the Society will receive a FREE, PRE-PUBLICATION COPY of the paperback edition of Histories of Labour: National and International Perspectives, edited by Joan Allen, Alan Campbell and John McIlroy, in May 2010. With contributions from leading labour historians from around the world, this 400-page volume examines the development of labour historiography in Britain, Ireland, North America, Australia, Germany, India and Japan as well as transnationally. The paperback edition will not be available to the general public until the following year at a price of £18.95.
  • All members will receive the normal three issues of Labour History Review, the leading British journal in the field.
  • In addition, members will receive a free copy of Making Labour History: Labour History Review Fiftieth Anniversary Supplement. Four essays trace the development of labour history societies in Britain, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. This 80,000 word text is being distributed to members along with Labour History Review, volume 75, number 1, in April 2010. (It will retail to non-members of the Society for £15.00)
  • On the provision of a valid NUS card or letter from a university representative stating the date on which studentship expires, students can now subscribe to Labour History Review for just £15.00.

These 50th anniversary celebration offers are available to all individuals who are members of the SSLH in 2010, (subject to availability). All individuals who subscribe to Labour History Review automatically become members of the Society for the Study of Labour History. An individual subscription to LHR for 2010 will cost £28.00. If you are already a member, please encourage friends and colleagues to subscribe and take advantage of these special offers.
