In spite of their extensive touring and the considerable number of gigs they’ve played in the NYC area in recent times, it had been a few years since my last Built to Spill concert and the anticipation for this one was awfully high.  Suffice to say, I wasn’t disappointed; the show that the band put on, along with the songs they chose to play, made it worth the wait.  Beginning with the vibrantly melodic “Traces”, the group pulled tracks from most of their albums, threw in a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” and ended with a one-two punch of the often-requested (at least on this night) crowd pleaser “Cars” and “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain” from Doug Martsch’s side project, the Halo Benders.  All in all, a wonderful show to reacquaint me with the band after my hiatus.

We taped this show from the dead-center spot on the balcony, right above the soundboard.  Aside from the house mix being a touch bass-heavy in our location, the resultant recording is indicative of the very good to excellent audio that’s typical of this venue and sounds great.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Oh Land: October 10, 2010 Backyard Brunch Sessions - FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

When we suggested to our friends at the Backyard Brunch Sessions that they showcase a Danish electro-pop artist that we had previously raved about on this site, we were met with a bit of skepticism.  Nobody was sure that the band’s reliance on densely layered electronics could be abandoned for the acoustic backyard setting.  We insisted that the quality of Oh Land’s songs - and her incipient star power (you may have seen her recently in Vogue, Nylon or Style.com lately) - were worth it.  Truth be told, our hosts did compromise a little - Nanna Øland Fabricius and her band did bring along a few plug-in items.  And, as we predicted, they gave us a stunning set that was radically different than anything that had been in this Bushwick backyard before.   For this show, the band specially rehearsed heavily reworked versions of the songs that wowed us at Brooklyn Bowl back in June, and have since played to Fashion Week crowds at private gigs, and at opening gigs for Mates of State in the U.S.  Squeezed together on a park bench, surrounded by a drum, omnichords, a toy keyboard, and a mixer, these semi-acoustic versions gave a new dimension to each of Nanna’s songs.  This unique set will not likely be repeated again, and even better, it included a new song that we had not heard before, “Rainbow.”  We expect the band to be back to their more “traditional” setup when they play another BBS-related show at Brooklyn Bowl on November 8, which will also feature The Canon Logic, Arms, The Courtesy Tier, and Fatty Acid.  Expect to see an EP from Oh Land released stateside in October on Epic Records.

I recorded this set by mic’ing Nanna with small DPA omnidirectional mics on her collar, and two DPA cardiod mics (Danish mics for a Danish singer, I suppose) placed on either side of the musicians.  Despite some occasional mild handling noise from Nanna’s hair brushing the mic surface, the recording is outstanding. Enjoy!

Sharon Van Etten: October 8, 2010 Rock Shop - Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On the night of the release show for her outstanding new CD epic, Sharon Van Etten played a sold out and packed Rock Shop. Sharon has said many times that she suffers from excessive shyness, but on this night, far from being overwhelmed by the intensity of the crowd she was confident, relaxed and having fun. Sharon performed a similar set to her August show at Rock Shop, but added a special mini acoustic set at the end of this special night. Accompanied again by the excellent Cat Martino, Sharon has added a new drummer and new bassist to the band we saw this Summer. The new rhythm section seems to have added some extra muscle to the material, so that new songs such as “Don’t Do It” (streaming below) came across with a heavier rock beat. But it was the four-song solo acoustic songs that closed the set where Sharon seemed to say thank you to her long-time fans. As she was brought back for an encore, the calls for “Damn Right” were acceded and Sharon delivered one of her oldest numbers with an extra edge — a touching acknowledgment of her past as she moves towards a brighter future.

I recorded this set with the Neumanns placed in front of the soundboard cage mixed with a feed from the board. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Built to Spill: October 6, 2010 Highline Ballroom - FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

After the 78-minute set of Built To Spill that we saw this July at Irving Plaza, we were worried that the band had decided people were over long sets of theirs.  Thankfully, this Wednesday’s show at the Highline Ballroom was back to their usual set-length standards.  Although BTS has toured near-incessantly in New York in the past two years (at least 8 shows covered by this site, plus a few that I am sure I am missing), each show offers new surprises and treats.   Tonight, a cover of Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” was a particular highlight, along with an encore that included “Twin Falls” segueing directly into an extended version of “Some” from their classic album The Normal Years.   The sprawling “Randy Described Eternity,” off of Perfect From Now, was another classic that I had not seen recently.  There are not many bands that can keep us coming back for this many shows in such a relatively short span of time, but Doug Martsch’s dynamic guitar work and continued rhythmic exploration still gets us every time.

I recorded this set from the center of the floor with a combination of Schoeps hypercardiod microphones and DPA cardiods mounted one above the other.  The four-mic mix perfectly captures the quality house mix from the Highline staff.  Enjoy!

Dead Confederate: September 28, 2010 Music Hall of Williamsburg - FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

One of the gratifying aspects of the taping hobby is discovering new music from like-minded tapers.  Of course, that isn’t always easy for me, given that most of the bands that are regulars on the “taper circuit” don’t have much in common with what I am into musically.  That is why I always pay extra attention to Southern Shelter, a taper blog run by a fan in Athens, GA with fairly similar taste in music and very similar taste in high-end recording gear.  His excellent recordings of Dead Confederate led me to check the band out at Music Hall of Williamsburg last month (I had not realized that we covered their show at Piano’s back in 2008!), and the show they put on, despite the room not being completely packed, was a standout for them.  Reams of special guests joined the band onstage, including DJ Logic, the band Alberta Cross, and Kevin Kinney.  Don’t let the Southern-sounding name of this Athens band fool you - there are no country stylings to be found here.  Confederate’s heavy sound unabashedly references 90s acts like Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr., with frontman Hardy Morris carving out his own territory on vocals that have more of a straight-ahead rock flavor.  The set closed out with an extended cover of “Rockin In the Free World” that jammed into “This Land Is Your Land” and back, with Kevin Kinney taking over the bulk of vocal duties.

As I was running late, I recorded this set from the optimum position in the venue with my small mobile rig.  While it is still better quality than 95% of the live recordings to be found on the Internet, this recording is not quite up to my usual standards.  In addition, there is noticeable hiss on “Rockin in the Free World’s” intro and during the “This Land Is Your Land” portion due to the volume control of the recorder slipping down and the resulting signal having to be boosted much more than usual in post-production.  Nonethess, this will be a nice document of a unique show, and I hope the sample shows I am being too hard on the sound quality.  Enjoy!

Unicycle Loves You: September 18, 2010 Cake Shop - Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The last time we saw Chicago’s Unicycle Loves You, it was at our 2009 CMJ show. In the last year, the band has recorded and released their superb second album Mirror Mirror, and on their Fall tour they passed through NYC and played Cake Shop a couple of weeks back. While this set got pushed back from posting due to the Pavement onslaught, readers should not interpret the delay as a lack of enthusiasm of this site for ULY and the new record. Mirror Mirror is a refined take on this band’s crunchy reverb-driven psychedelic pop, and this set featured all tracks from the new album. Unicycle Loves You will return to NYC for CMJ and they are playing our CMJ at Cake Shop on October 21.

I recorded this set as with all shows from this venue, with the DPAs mounted six feet from the stacks. While the vocals are somewhat buried in the mix for this show, the sound has great clarity. Enjoy!

Pearl and the Beard: September 25, 2010 Backyard Brunch Sessions - Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

2nd October 2010 by nyctaper No Comments

I love musical revelations — those moments when you realize that the band you are watching is truly something special. Last Saturday, we had this experience within the first minute of the Pearl and the Beard set at the Backyard Brunch Sessions. The opening song “Voice in My Throat” (streaming below) showcases their sumptuous harmonies, but it was a mere introduction to the impressive work of this talented trio. Each of the seven songs performed showcased a special talent of the individual members, whether it be the ability of Jeremy Styles to transition from a sweet tenor to a rich baritone in the midst of one song (”Reverend Pants”), or percussion/multi-instrumentalist Jocelyn Mackenzie’s beautiful operatic solo in “Coronado Brown”. The final number was Emily Hope Price’s showcase. “Hot Volcano” is a NOLA-styled jazzy vamp that brought the house down. As Pearl and the Beard continues to perform and reach a larger audience, the many talents of this unique trio will become obvious to all. They are playing several CMJ showcases, including The Music Slut party at Pianos on Tuesday October 19, and we wish they are playing our show. But unfortunately the NYCTaper CMJ show was booked before I was taken under the spell of Pearl.

This set was recorded as I have all the backyard sessions, with four microphones strategically placed around the band. We spent much time on the post-production working on the levels and balances, and we are extremely happy with the superb final product. Enjoy!

Pavement: September 24, 2010 Central Park Summerstage - FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Oh, Pavement, how we will miss you.  This final show of the band’s five-night NYC (four nights in Central Park) run had a very different vibe than the previous shows, with the band giving off a bit more of a subdued vibe.  The setlist emphasized the more melodic, slower songs from the catalog, and Malkmus in particular seemed intent on jamming and reinterpreting songs (leading to a hilarious “Pavement and the Jicks!!” comment by Bob).  At times the more laid back approach worked - such as on the epic “And Then (The Hexx)” and the extended “Heaven Is A Truck” that was a last minute substitution for “Fight This Generation” in the setlist.  At others, it seemed the band was a tad off their game, with a few false starts here and there.  The set closed out with “Range Life” featuring the recording engineer Bryce Goggin, who mixed both Wowee Zowee and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and played keyboards in the recorded version of “Range Life,” performing live with the band - undoubtedly a dream come true for anyone who spends most of their time behind the console!

Where do we go from here?  Fans can hope that the band decides to make new music or at least tour together again, but that seems less than likely at this point.  What we will have left will be our memories of these beautiful nights - which Bob himself acknowledged the band would never forget - and the music itself.  Having Pavement back was also a reminder of how dearly they were missed.  To quote the simple “Summer Babe” refrain, made all the more poignant now: “Don’t go.”

I recorded this set with the same mobile rig as the Williamsburg Waterfront show and Wednesday’s show.  There was almost no wind, and the crowd around me was enthusiastic but respectful.  As a result, the recording is excellent.   As someone who never got to see their favorite band perform (due in part to an untimely death in the band), I greatly appreciate Pavement giving fans who had not seen them before a second chance.  One of the main reasons that I record concerts is because I know how much I treasure the old recordings that people made of my favorite band, since they are the closest thing I have to the real live experience.  I hope that some people will feel the same way about these recordings.  Enjoy!

Pavement: September 23, 2010 Central Park Summerstage - Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

Matt from Fluxblog described Thursday night’s Pavement show in an interview with NPR as “kinda tired, odd moods, a bit sloppier, definitely just kinda weird and goofy.” Matt is a bright and perceptive guy — his music writing is some of the best on the web. But in this case, he’s dead wrong. I have the audio proof to offer you. Pavement’s performance was loose, but that’s their forte. But there is no denying the energy of the individual performances from this show, not the least of which was the moment early in the set when the full band kicked in on “Gold Soundz” at the very point where the full moon illuminated the post-dusk night air. The band kept up the pace for twenty minutes straight through a screaming, manic version of “Unfair”, when they finally took a breath to wish a fan happy birthday and slowed things down with “Spit On A Stranger”. Far from sloppy or tired, Malkmus vocals on “Stranger” were confident and relaxed. The show kicked back into high gear with the heavy sounds of “Rattled” and “Stereo”. The band then whipped out rarely played (first of the tour) “Loretta’s Scars” (streaming below). “That was pretty good, and I’ve been there for all three times we played it, good job guys”, mused Malkmus. The band recovered from a slight snafu at the opening of “Stop Breathin’” to reclaim an inspired version of the Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain classic. Malkmus spoke sincerely about how “Cut Your Hair” had changed his life before delving into perhaps the band’s most well-known number. The jammy “Fight This Generation”, superb guitar work on “Fin”, and the band’s other “hit” “Summer Babe” were among the closing tracks in this outstanding main set. The encore “set” consisted of 8 songs and one apparent “tease”, offering the packed Summerstage crowd a neat two-hour, twenty-eight song epic show.

I recorded this set with the four-mic rig from the front of the soundboard cage, about 100 feet from the stage. While the distance and wind were factors, the Neumann hypers raised to 13 feet captured the high end, and the DPAs at 10 feet secured the bass presence. Overall, I’m pleased with the quality of this recording. Enjoy!
