Yvonne Gage – Doin’ It In A Haunted House (US 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on October 15, 2010

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

Born 1959, Chicago, USA. When aged only 14 Gage joined the Soulettes with whom she stayed until she was 21. During this period they changed their name to First Love and then Love, subsequently recording an album for Chycago International Music in 1980.

However, by then Gage had departed to join the backing singers for Captain Sky. She made her solo debut with “Garden Of Eve” in 1981 on Atlantic Records to little reaction. Gage then sang with new wave group Ministry, appearing in shows with Madness, Police and Culture Club.

After singing a commercial for Ultra-Curl, she recorded her first album Virginity on CIM/Epic which, like Captain Sky’s records, was produced by Don Burnside. Billed as the unofficial answer to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, the album track, “Doin’ It In A Haunted House” made the bottom of the US R&B chart and reached the UK Top 50 in June 1984.

Cyndi Lauper – The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough (Japan 12″ Promo)

Posted by DjPaulT on October 15, 2010

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

With OBI strip

“The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” was a single released by singer Cyndi Lauper for The Goonies, a 1985 film which was released at the same time as this single.

Before its inclusion on The Essential Cyndi Lauper in 2003, the song was considered a rarity among fans, having never appeared on any of Lauper’s albums or the 1994 compilation Twelve Deadly Cyns…and Then Some. Lauper admitted in an interview with Matthew Rettenmund for his 1996 book Totally Awesome 80s: A Lexicon of the Music, Videos, Movies, TV Shows, Stars, and Trends of that Decadent Decade that she hated the song, which was why she had chosen not to include it on her first compilation.

Steven Spielberg had made Cyndi the musical director for The Goonies soundtrack. She sought out new bands to be included on the project including her friends, The Bangles.

Cyndi refused to play the song live after 1986. She finally incorporated it back into her live show during a 2005 concert in Baltimore, Maryland. Fans kept screaming to hear the song, and she sang it acapella. She has since incorporated the song back into her live set, due to overwhelming fan recognition.

The song peaked at #10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The song did much better in Japan peaking at #1 on the Japanese Oricon International Singles Chart.

Nightmares In Wax (Dead Or Alive) – Nightmares In Wax (UK 12″)

Posted by DjPaulT on October 12, 2010

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1980

Before Dead Or Alive the band was known as “Nightmares In Wax”

Dead or Alive (DOA for short), was founded in 1980 in Liverpool  by Pete Burns, who was encouraged by local music promoters to gather a band together based on his outrageous appearance alone. It was only after rehearsing in 1977 with some friends that Burns realized he really did have a powerful singing voice, and his first band was an outfit he formed with friends Julian Cope, Pete Wylie, and Phil Hurst. Dubbing themselves The Mystery Girls, they played only one gig (opening for Sham 69 at Eric’s in Liverpool in November 1977) before disintegrating. Burns returned in 1979 with a new band, Nightmares in Wax.

Nightmares In Wax debut saw this funny and rather suspect homage to leather clad bikers. A three-track EP with the song Black Leather on the A-side, described by Pete as “a one-note song for ten minutes”, is actually only half that song and midway breaks into That’s The Way (I Like It), later a hit for Dead Or Alive. The B-side features two more songs, Girl’s Song and Shangri-La, inspired by Sixties all-girl group, the Shangri-Las. Pete said at the time that he felt more of an affinity with the current punk movement and all tracks have these punk overtones. The EP, only ever released in the U.K. on the Inevitable label, never entered the chart, but made the Indie Top 30. In 1984, the EP was re-released on 12″ with Black Leather and Shangri-La with a different Blue sleeve and again in 1985 with a ‘melting-monster face’ picture sleeve with the same tracks. Both re-releases appeared on the KY label.

The b-side track Shamgri-La include several obscure and unidentified movie and television samples that were previously not on the 1980 original.
