New Video & Interview

Posted October 25, 2010 by Ryan Harvey

Hey yall, I have posted a second video from my upcoming album "Ordinary Heroes". The song is called Elwood and it's about my ancestor Elwood Harvey, an underground railroad conductor in Pennsylvania. The album is nowhere near done, but expect it in the spring or summer of 2011. Dig it.

Also, I did an interview with the folks from the War Resister's League recently and it's now online. It touches on organizing, riot-folk, some of my songs, the against me! controversy, and other things...

Riseup.net Needs Some Help!

Posted October 16, 2010 by Ryan Harvey

Hey yall, Riseup.net, to whom who owe eternal gratititude for making the Riot-Folk website and extensive downloads possible (which happens to be the crux of how we get our music and words out there) is asking for help! They are trying to stay afloat to continue offering their invaluable services to the radical online community, providing secure email, web hosting, email lists, and more to folks working for social justice. PLEASE SUPPORT THEM if you are in a spot to offer some cash!

BLOWBACK is done!!!

Posted October 5, 2010 by Ryan Harvey

My newest album is finally, after 2 1/2 years, ready. I started it several times and just couldn't find the time and energy to finish it, but recently Mark and I just pushed through it and made a beautiful CD. Please support this by getting the album, which I am hoping folks can put $10 down for. I did all the artwork for it myself, the painting, collage, layout, recording, mixing, and song-writing. Mark helped a lot with recording and wrote one of the songs as well. It also features many guest artists who added their talents to the soundscape. I'm digging it, I hope you do too.

Hey folks, here's a real easy way you can help me out! I entered my song "Picketline Song" in the Union Song Contest, and if I get the most votes I could win a much needed $2,000, which would be enough for me to release a new CD!

You have to register to vote, but it doesn't take long.

Welcome baby Saoirse!

Posted August 30, 2010 by Evan Greer & Friends

Yay! Our baby is finally here!

Saoirse Dahy Giolligan Fitzgerald-Greer was born at our home in Boston on August 14th, 2010 at 2:25am, weighing in at 7 lbs and 21.5 inches tall!

I'm working on writing down the story of our wonderful labor, which will be posted soon. We are so greatful for the amazing team of friends, midwives, and our doula who supported us through the birth, which was to say the least the most incredible experience of my life. Saoirse's name is pronounced "Seer-Sha" and means "freedom" in Irish-Gaelic. Baby is very healthy and happy and eats pretty much all the time.

So does this mean that I'll be "settling down" and getting a "real job?" Nope. Baby Saoirse and my amazing partner Erin Ryan will be coming with me on several tours this year including Europe in October, Northeast in November, Southeast in February, and West Coast in April. Get in touch NOW if you want to bring us to your town, we'd love to come! E-mail: evangreer@gmail.com if you have any ideas for us!

Currently music is our little family's only source of income, so if you want to support us and keep us on the road offering political music and workshops, now would be a great time to buy one of my CDs or make a donation for the music you download. You can do that at www.evangreer.org or www.cdbaby.com/evangreer

RIP Tuli

Posted July 13, 2010 by Mark Gunnery

Tuli Kupferberg, cartoonist, poet, activist and founding member of the proto-folkpunk band the Fugs died yesterday at the age of 86. Tuli was an uncompromising critic of everyone and everything, a mad Jewish revolutionary songweaver who straddled the gaps between generations, bridging hippie, beatnik, punk, and folk subcultures into a great, steaming pile of gor nischt.

He was a dirty old man, he will be missed and I hope he is giving out funny cigarettes and Communist literature in that great schoolyard in the sky. Check out the classic Fugs songs "Nothing" , "CIA Man" and Tuli singing "Where Is My Wandering Jew?"

Iraq Update Article and Against Me! blog post

Posted May 18, 2010 by Ryan Harvey

Check out a new article I wrote and that Common Dreams published. It's an update on the situation on the ground in Iraq and suggestions for a staggering anti-war movement. And check out the organization I helped build and work with, the Civilian-Soldier Alliance.

Also, folks might be interested to hear Tom Gabel of Against Me's thoughts on their new single "I Was A Teenage Anarchist". Having opened for AM early on in my song-writing, and seeing their popularity surge in the last few years, I have mixed feelings about the direction they chose, but also sympathize with their bitterness at the scene they, and I, came out of. Read it here.

Whoa. Arizona. Jeez.

Posted April 22, 2010 by Mark Gunnery

The Arizona state legislature approved the toughest anti-immigration bill in the country, giving police the authority to determine people's immigration status based on "reasonable suspicion" or more bluntly put, the right to racially profile immigrants. Please sign this petiton immigration.change.org/petitions/view/tell_governor_brewer_to_stand_up_for_arizona_and_veto_sb1070 and call Governor Jan Brewer at (602) 542-4331 demanding she not allow AZ to be turned into a police state. And do it soon! This could be signed into law within a couple days.

Hey white anti-racists . . .

Posted February 17, 2010 by Mark Gunnery

Please check out the U.S. for All of Us call to action and statement of commitment, sign it and get involved. www.usforallofus.org/  At this moment in US history where barely veiled racism in the form of tea parties, anti-immigration groups and anti-healthcare protests is mobilizing many white people, it is of vital importance that white anti-racists step up and organize to fight for a truly just, inclusive world and country where there is no room for racism. This is a good start.

Status of New Album...

Posted February 9, 2010 by Ryan Harvey

For those who are wondering just what the deal is with my new album, Manifest Democracy (or some other name), here's the deal. I've been working on this thing for over a year and a half, writing the songs, recording them slowly, trying to add the right spices to it. I have beautiful cover art for it and big ideas. In the meantime, I've started writing songs for an even newer release, which aims to be a lot of positive energy (this album is pretty haunting).

So, it's nearing compleition. I was trying to release it this month, but my computer died last week and much of the album is on it. So I'm waiting for a friend to extract the files, then I'm gonna save some cash and try to get myself a new used-machine, and get it back together.

That said, please consider buying it when it comes out, cuz it's got a lot of time and energy stuffed into it. I will start posting MP3s up as I finish them, hopefully within the month.

Howard Zinn Dead

Posted January 30, 2010 by Ryan Harvey

Damn. I don't know where to start. Howard Zinn turned things upside down and rightside up again, and the work he put into the telling of history, the stories he amplified, the justice he spread through his words and actions, has been a gift to my generation and those to come. A People's History was the first real book I read, and it turned a young man who hated history into a young, eager historian! So, onward! Continue making history, and a new generation of grassroots historians will continue to put the work in to record it and pass it along to the future generations, so they can learn from an expand on our work.

Read it, write it, teach it, make it!

Hey all. Anything I sell today, Veteran's Day, will benefit Iraq Veterans Against the War. I suggest buying "The Violence of War" if you haven't. Or just donate to them directly anytime by going to www.ivaw.org. Better yet, email every soldier and veteran you know and tell them about IVAW.

Michael Franti, Tom Morello, Boots Riley, and others are also donating all of their sales today to IVAW. So if you feel like participating there too, go help em' out more by checking out the new Street Sweeper album, or Tom's new "Fabled City".

Also, read IVAW's letter in-protest to Obama, handed to him yesterday at Fort Hood by a war-resister in the barracks. And read Matthis Chrioux's veteran's day statement.

Looking for shows to fundraise for community space

Posted August 11, 2009 by Shannon Murray

I am hard at work with 8 other folks opening up a community space in Bemidji.  We named it the Root Cellar Community Space and we are hoping to have it open by late September.  The outdoor space is already up and running. The community garden is amazing!!  Folks working on that project are getting ready to break new ground for more plots for next year.  I am excited to have the indoor space and lending library finally open and to finish the renovation stage!!!

As always, we are coming up with a shortfall of money, which has been a bit stressful as my partner and I are taking on the financial burden until we open and can have events and fundraisers at the space. Mainly the place needs roofing repair before winter, so I am planning to head out for a few mini-tours to raise some funds for it.  If anyone wants to set up a fundraiser for our project, or joint fundraisers for awesome projects in your areas that would be sweet. Also- if anyone has contacts at colleges who may want to set up a show at their school, send em my way.  I am looking to raise around $3,000 for the roof and another $2,000 for other repairs including a new chimney.

love from minnesota!

SITE IS BACK!

Posted August 9, 2009 by Ryan Harvey

Sorry for that long-ass wait yall. Site is live now.

A lot of us have been really busy lately, working, learning new skills, working through hard personal times, starting community spaces in home-towns, growing food, and brewing up plans to write books and essays. Others have been working hard making hot new music but with no website to help promote and distribute their music. Thanks to Micah, our friend and programmer, we have a newly designed, less-hackable, and more functional website.

Things will still be a bit slow as we re-upload songs and re-enter lyrics and other info. But you can start relying on this site again  for our shows, new songs, etc.

Stay tuned, ans thanks for being patient! And thanks Micah!

Iraq Article for The Nation Magazine

Posted August 1, 2010 by Ryan Harvey

An article I've been working on with my friend Sarah Lazare was published this week in The Nation magazine. It's an interview with 3 veterans of the Army unit involved in the Wikileaks video incident in Baghdad in 2007, which came to light in April. More at my blog as well.

Free Fahad Hashmi!

Posted August 19, 2009 by Ryan Harvey

SEE HERE

Syed Hashmi, known to his family and friends as Fahad, was born in Karachi, Pakistan in 1980, the second child of Syed Anwar Hashmi and Arifa Hashmi. Fahad immigrated with his family to America when he was three years old. His father said “We knew there would be many opportunities for us here in the United States. We came here to find the American dream.”

The large Hashmi family settled in Flushing, New York and soon developed deep roots throughout the tri-state area. Fahad graduated from Robert F. Wagner High School in 1998 and attended SUNY Stony Brook University. He transferred to Brooklyn College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2003.

A devout Muslim, through the years Fahad established a reputation as an activist and advocate. In 2003, Fahad enrolled in London Metropolitan University in England to pursue a master’s degree in international relations, which he received in 2006.

On June 6, 2006, Fahad was arrested in London Heathrow airport by British police based on an American indictment charging him with material support of Al Qaida. He was subsequently held in Belmarsh Prison, Britain’s most notorious jail.

The US government accused Fahad of providing material support to Al Qaeda, but a close look at the evidence shows that the charges make little sense. Fahad is NOT charged with providing any money or resources to any terrorists or being a member of al Qaeda. Instead, the US government charged Fahad with allowing an old acquaintance — Junaid Babar — to stay in Fahad’s London apartment for about two weeks in 2004. During that two week period, Babar allegedly kept several raincoats, ponchos, and waterproof socks in luggage that Babar temporarily stored in Fahad’s apartment. The US government then alleges that at some point Babar gave the socks and ponchos to a high ranking member of al Qaeda. There is no allegation that Fahad is a member of al Qaeda or that he ever personally gave or helped to give anything to any member of al Qaeda.
