FT urges Vince Cable to investigate News Corp's BSkyB takeover
DATELINE: 22/9/10The Financial Times has today (20 September) joined calls for the business secretary, Vince Cable, to investigate News Corporation's proposed takeover of BSkyB, arguing that there is a "clear public interest case for doing so". In its leader column the FT, part of Pearson Group, which also owns book publisher Penguin and 50% of the Economist, argued that there is a "clear risk" that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp could "dominate the media scene, lock out challengers and stifle the diversity of debate". The FT leader also refers to the News of the World phone-hacking affair, saying it raises "broader questions about Mr Murdoch's powerful grip on the UK media industry".
Tell Vince...
Take action to support our campaign to stop Rupert Murdoch taking control of BSkyB. Tens of thousands of people signed the 38 Degrees petition telling Vince Cable to stand up to Murdoch's power grab. This is huge progress - but we need to act together fast to stop Rupert Murdoch fighting back.
Let's just get rid of it
DATELINE: 17/9/10The Press Complaints Commission has conducted an 'independent' report on its future. But it's not independent and it doesn't tackle any of the problems. Tim Gopsill has had enough of this fakery and says it's time to campaign, not for improvements to the PCC, but its abolition.
Media and democracy - Twitter could make a difference
DATELINE: 9/9/10Enough is more than enough. Ordinary members of the public like me are increasingly alarmed by the growth of powerful media corporations like News International, who can make or break governments and individuals. This is no new phenomenon but, as readers of this site will be all too aware, the stranglehold on print and broadcast media threatens to get tighter and tighter under the coalition government. Talk of cross media rules relaxation and a shrinking BBC sends shivers down our spines.
