Anatomy of a (Twit)Book Club meeting
The Mute Herald

October 16th 2010 11 o’clock, I arrive at Wild Peeta, the current venue for our book club gatherings.  The place is quiet on a Saturday morning, so it is the ideal location to host our sometimes loud and often bizarre discussions.  Nominally the meeting kicks off on the hour, but I only see @TDAllonsy, set up behind her mac.  “UAE time,” she says with a sigh.  I empty my pockets at my seat, a habit I display when my better half is not around to supply carrying capacity in the form of a handbag, and get a coffee. We catch up, and the others start trickling in – @WajihaSaid, who charged herself with snapping some pictures of the meet. Which of course didn’t stop half of everybody else from later on snatching the camera to try their hand at it. @Theregos, who as always provides the extra incentive in the form of cupcakes.  Today it was coffee and walnut. Enough said. @Zooberry, @Shaahima, @Hamna_ (dubbed our resident Niqabi), @Aabo0 and @RupertBu, the man behind the twitter ha

Week 10: Internet Activism: the lazy way to save face?
savvy affirmations

In a wave of confusion caused by the Malcolm Gladwell article published on October forth by the New York Times entitled Small Change I wanted to consider the topic of internet activism. Whether the simple act of staying at home and ‘liking’ a cause, protesting a policy via email or objecting through a tweeted post citizens believe they are activists. I do not wish to side for or against the ideas put forward by Gladwell, I believe you are better to read the article, or do some leg work and make an opinion of your own. My question is by staying indoors are we going against the spirit of protest? Let me turn to the words of Gil Scott-Heron from his 1971 album Pieces of a Man, and the song ‘The Revolution Will not be Televised’ (lyrics and video at the end of this blog post). Basically, In case that song was a little to long for you, Scott-Heron talks about something being missing from the act of watching the revolution, you are not there, you are not involved and

Some while ago (see Top Dog Blog) I was maundering on about how to get the big cheeses in your organisation on board about social media. This topic has swum to the top of my mind again recently after reading this Mashable article which suggests that many top executives aren’t engaging with social media at all (read the article here). It’s also come up in conversation with some colleagues from another organisation who are just thinking about getting started with social media. One of the issues they raised was how to make sure their bosses and managers were behind their efforts without that translating into unreachable objectives in terms of value of donations, level of engagement or numbers of ‘followers’. As social media is so new, it needs to walk a tightrope here between being dismissed as a complete waste of time and being hailed as the Great Panacea that will, at a stroke, raise your organisation’s profile to dizzy heights, fill your coffers with donat

Social Media 101 at Social Media Camp Victoria
raincoaster media

This is video of my talk on Social Media 101 at, yes, Social Media Camp Victoria, which was brilliantly organized by ideazone and BWestInteractive and I’m not just saying that because they were smart enough to invite me! Although it counts, right? So here is the video, taken by BChannelNews, and constitutes, as well as a great intro to Social Media, further proof I need to get back to the gym ASAP. Yang Taiji Simplified 24- Form: Brush Knee Push - How-to
Calm Chicago's Blog

New You Tube video of Yang taiji 24-form showing how students at Calm Chicago learn the upper body and lower body movements separately and then put them together. Makes learning taiji a bit easier by allowing students to build up mindfulness as they train. The focus? – keeping practice simple. The more we can practice and keep the taiji very simple. without a lot of fancy concepts, the more we can build up our mindful, single-pointed focus. We’re in no hurry. Piece by piece. Thanks for stopping by, Hillary

Not all spin doctors use their powers for evil
Drag0nista's Blog

Being an effective communicator is a lot like having the Force – you can either use your power for good or evil. To illustrate, I’d suggest that JFK and Martin Luther King Jr used their power for good. I would place Anthony Robbins and the Shopping Television Network at the other end of the spectrum (yes, my definition of evil is non-Catholic to say the least). Others would place the dreaded spin doctor (or public relations practitioner) in the same quadrant as the insistent voice telling you to call with your credit card details right now to get not one, but three pedi-eggs for the price of one. I will state up front that I am a communications (ie. PR) professional, and have plied my trade for over 20 years. My training is in communications theory and practice, which is not the same thing as journalism. Yes, I learned how to write in a clear and (hopefully) compelling fashion. I also learned how people pay attention, listen and learn. I understand the relationship between people’s val

SNSD's Jessica, gets Her Twitter Account Suspended.
Welcome;

Suspended? ALREADY!? Just three days after its creation, SNSD’s Jessica had her Twitter account suspended due to anti-fans. The account (twitter.com/jess_syj) opened on October 13th, and it’s speculated that hordes of anti-fans falsely abused the “Report Spam” system. Users can find their accounts suspended if there are massive spam complaints sent to the “Help Centre”. Numerous anti-fans also blocked her profile. On the plus side though, this incident reveals that the overseas popularity of SNSD has increased to a formidable presence over the years, as the group seems to have a proportional amount of haters to fans. I guess this is just another reason why some celebrities don’t use Twitter. - Personally.. I think the fact that Anti-Fans would do that.. Is Completely Immature and Idiotic, because if you didn’t like someone, celebrity or not.. why would you spend time paying attention to them? Let alone, taking the time to repeatively report them for doing nothing; but then Again,

Measuring Interactivity
The Interactive Age

Interactive tools are not only being used by advertisers, but by journalists as well. Journalists are using social networking sites like Twitter to gain information from their audience and post links to their news stories. Focusing on Twitter specifically, I wonder what type of influence news providers have on their audience in this platform? And how is it measured? I recently read a report, The Influentials: New Approaches for Analyzing Influence on Twitter, which used an interesting methodology to determine the influence of Twitter users. Influence on Twitter is “the potential of an action of a user to initiate a further action by another user,” according to the report. The methodology for determining influence included looking at the numbers followers/followees of a user, examining re-tweets, and counting replies. After reading this report, I decided to do a little test of my own. Especially following the UT shooting in Austin last week, I was curious about the type of influence Aus

Day 17- someone you would want to switch lives with for one day and why
The Mind of Mr G

Mmmm if i would want to switch lives for a day and why??? Mmmm thats a really interesting question. As boring as it might sound, I’m actually pretty happy with who I am and what I’e become. I’m not exactly sure who I would want to change lives with for a day. Although the thought of being Hugh Heffner for a day is rather appealing. Mmm maybe I would like to be a Mongolian Goat Herder for a day and enjoy the peacefulness and tending to my goats in outer Mongolia – I wonder if you get 3G reception out there?? Do Mongolian Goat Herders have facebook or twitter? Do the Mongolise herd goats? If your from Mongolia please feel free to comment. But anyway there you have it
