Blogs about: Music

Trance. House. Rock. CountryJazz. Blues. Soul. Classical. Latin. One woman’s noise is another woman’s music. Once upon a time, we went to record stores to sift for new artists or albums. Now we click our mouses on a “play” button — over and over — until we find something we like. Then, we plug portable music players into computers, load ‘em up with tunes, and off we go (or we stay at our desk, headphones on, drowning out office noise). The way we listen to music may have radically changed in the last decade, but the song remains the same: We’re melodic creatures, responding emotionally and physically to the lull of a siren’s heartache or the strum of a guitar.

The Petticoats - Normal EP (1980)
PERFECTION OF PERPLEXION

Triggering yet another girlfriend reverie to my impossible boyish ego trip, The Petticoats were transmitted directly to the vulnerability of mine, from arcane Killed By Death camp. I love the name, “The Petticoats”.  The Petticoats are Stef Petticoat who carries every weight on her own. But it’s quite simple; You know, The Raincoats, Kleenex/Liliput and all that. So it’s not that simple. We just have one more singular girl; A haughty young english harridan, fondling her bare-bone instruments, endearingly howls, hollers, and warbles in her low-rent hole littered with all sorts of handcrafted tchotchkes and punk memorabilia, in the lauguage of puberty-striken girls that are sensitive yet daring. This is as gutsy and stripped-down as your cherished friend could be at his/her leisure. “Ho-oo, it’s so funny, hahaha, really funny, Ho-oo what do you think I am?“. Here‘s a petite interview of her. According to the interview, Ohio hipster pop

Pantera Fans in Love
Mad Girl's Love Song

This one is fun! Nerf Herder – Pantera Fans in Love I bleached my hair just like Vince Neil Then you made me cut it like James Hetfield We’re gonna put an end to alternative rock We’ll find a way to make the Cranberries stop We went to Sears for pictures at Christmastime But they wouldn’t let us make the metal sign No they wouldn’t let us make the metal sign I’ll bring the wine you bring the bread and cheese It’s hard to eat when you’re headbanging Makin’ out in the middle of the pit How come Slayer doesn’t sing about this If anything comes between you and me Then heavy metal heaven, that’s where we’ll meet We are Pantera fans in love What’s with these punk rock nerds, they can’t even sing I wish we’d never heard of The Offspring A candlelit dinner, now we’re holding hands I taught you how to draw your first pentagram We went miniature golfing but we didn’t get far Because we used the

Teenager Killed Changing Stations
KRLD-AM

A 13 year old girl was killed this weekend in an accident on State Highway 360 in Grand Prairie.  Police say Kelsee Williams, an eighth grade student at Gunn Junior High in Arlington, was riding in the back seat of a Chevrolet Suburban when she apparently reached forward to change the radio station using the controls on the steering wheel.   The 16 year old driver lost control, and the Suburban flipped off the road.  Williams was killed.  The other three teenagers in the Suburban were not injured. Grand Prairie Police say no one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.

What My Hands Remember - 6
Bill Davis' Words

Another installment of my writing on my author friend Luis Alberto Urrea’s prompt “What Your Hands Remember.” The Dry Grit of Mexican Hillside Orphanages Dry, fine, gritty, reddish-brown dust. The soil from which the life of Tijuana springs. In your clothes (whack ‘em and see the clouds), in your hair (shower water runs off, repelled like rain on duck feathers), and of course, on your hands (just try to brush it off.) Not digging in the dirt? No matter. Everything you touch is dusty and will gladly share some dust with you. It’s in your food. It’s in the air. And yes, now it’s in your lungs. Wash your hands in the sparse water of the hillside Rose Park orphanage. Go ahead. Your hands will be dusty again in moments. My hands remember that feeling. Dusty. Unless it’s mud season. And well, they remember that, too. Holding Street Tacos in Tijuana The warm, pliable feel of a Tijuana street taco. Of several tacos. Eight tacos, ten… as many as a sixteen year-old boy can eat. Mmmm, tacos

Scherzo Capriccioso, Op. 66
Caution : Ant

I was listening to Dvorak and I noticed Twizzler my cat particularly enjoyed this sweeping piece of music. I recommend playing more Dvorak for your cats. They love it.

In The Trust Of Strangers
Pet Sounds & The Masterplan

After the upset of the middle of the night, I awoke the next day feeling remarkably fresh and ready for the day ahead. My main job was to arrange onward travel to Bukit Lawang, which is the gateway to the jungle and the chance to see organutans in the wild. The hostel owner, Ancha let me speak to his friend Ali G (I’m not joking) who is one of the guides for jungle trekking. He agreed to meet me at the bus station in Bukit Lawang. But before all that I needed to get there. Ancha advised me to walk a couple of streets and pick up a yellow 64 minibus which would take me to the bus terminal. From there I needed to take the L300 minibus all the way to Bukit Lawang. I sounded pretty straightforward. I got on the 64 easily and explained where I wanted to go. The driver seems to understand and then sets off, racing through the streets picking up, and dropping off, people including tiny school kids. It’s was mid day – why weren’t they in school? Was it just starting or

Blackbird Blackbird - "Float On"
safer in the dark

I was listening through the 20 short songs on Blackbird Blackbird’s debut LP, Summer Heart, and was surprised to hear a brief chillwavy take on Modest Mouse’s “Float On” emerge out of the haze of the mix. It’s an excellent cover, check it out below:
