  • Striking Steelworkers turned Carpenters for a Worthy Cause

     hall_1._1JPG.jpg

Earlier this year, there was a paul_hall_1.JPGdevastatiing fire in Happy Valley Goose Bay . It claimed the life of Shana Rea, daughter of Rhona Rea and Paul Hall.

Within hours there was an outpouring of support for the family.... that included a temporary home.

Since then a volunteer group has been working to build the family a brand new home and this week that job was made a little easier ....a group of steelworkers who are currently on strike put down the pickets, picked up the hammers...and put up the walls...

Tony Dawson spent a little time with the strikers turned carpenters, Cal Ponniuk is a Picket Captain, and the first to have a chat with Tony. Following that Tony spoke with Paul Hall.

  • RCMP Support "Take Back The Night March" in Rigolet

Rigolet March_1.jpgOn September 28th, 2010, residents of Rigolet came together as one group, to demonstrate a united front regarding violence directed at women. The march to "Take back the night" got under way at 7 pm and proceeded along a route from the Nunatsiavut Dept of Health and Social Development via several town streets and then finished back at the DHSD building where it started. Enthusiasm were not dampened by the cool wet weather, as spirited marchers took part.

"Take Back the Night March", which was first staged in North America in 1976 in New York City, is an annual event geared toward empowering women to confront fears about sexual assault by reclaiming the evening streets en masse. It is a powerful statement for women to be marching through the streets at night without men to 'protect' them. Notwithstanding men, who wish show their support to participants, are always encouraged to stand along the March route to show their support.

The local RCMP Detachment accepted an invitation from local organizers, Lorraine Allen and Paula Flowers, to participate by providing a police vehicle escort to ensure the safety of the marchers from vehicular traffic while on the roads.

The evening wrapped up with a post-march reception that included refreshments and materials regarding programs and resources available to persons experiencing violence, including information on the recently opened "Kirkina House"; the shelter for woman and children in Rigolet.

  • RCMP continue to intercept Booze and Drugs destined for Natuashish

    natuashish booze_1.JPG

Recently information was received by police that someone was attempting to smuggle both illegal alcohol  and drugs into the dry native community. As a result, on Wednesday police conducted a search of the Northern Ranger, destined for Natuashish.

    They seized

39...... 60 Ounce bottles of Liquor

10...... 26 Ounce bottles of Liquor

2........ 40 Ounce bottles of Liquor

And.... approximately 3 lbs of Marijuana.

RCMP say the catch was valued in the tens of thousands of dollars if sold locally. They believe if these illegal goods had of gotten out into the community there would have been devastating effects. Alcohol and drugs are commonly related to domestic violence , assaults , impaired driving and other related offences. The Natuashish detachment says they will continue to enforce the local by-law in efforts to keep the community a Safe and Dry Community.
