Michael Fallon, the deputy chairman of the Conservative party, has criticised new Labour leader Ed Miliband for not setting out how he will fill the "huge black hole" in public finances. He said Mr Miliband had "run away" from tough decisions. Deputy Liberal Democrat leader Simon Hughes, meanwhile, said there is "no doubt" Mr Miliband will be influenced by the trade unions, "which I'm not sure is a good thing". Mr Miliband earlier rejected claims he is a union stooge, telling the Andrew Marr show he was "his own man" and that the Red Ed label was "tiresome and rubbish".
