 Lebanon Ready to Welcome Ahmadinejad

Compiled by Davood Baqeri The Lebanese people are preparing to welcome President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during his landmark two-day visit to Beirut. Tens of thousands of Lebanese are expected to line the airport highway to welcome Ahmadinejad as he makes his way to central Beirut, where he will be received by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman. On Wednesday, Ahmadinejad will arrive in Beirut for his first state visit to Lebanon after taking office for the first time in 2005, news agencies reported. Over the past 10 days, the Islamic resistance group Hezbollah has erected hundreds of billboards bearing Ahmadinejad's portrait and carrying a message of welcome in Arabic and Farsi. Hezbollah's Secretary-General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah is expected to appear on stage with the Iranian leader. Naim Qassem, Hezbollah's deputy leader, said Ahmadinejad's arrival in Beirut would herald a new era of Lebanese sovereignty. ''It is an expression of friendship and support to Lebanon as a resistance army, its people and institutions,'' Theage.ae quoted Qassem as saying. ''The visit came upon the invitation of President Michel Suleiman, which means Lebanon wants Ahmadinejad to visit in order to strengthen ties with the Islamic Republic. We want to tell the whole world that we're proud of our friendships and ties with resisting countries.'' Ahmadinejad will also visit Hezbollah’s strongholds in the south of the country, where he will inspect several villages destroyed during Israel's 2006 war with Hezbollah. He will then attend a number of ceremonies in his honor as well as those intended to celebrate Hezbollah's victories over the Israeli enemy. Fostering Unity According to Iran's ambassador to Lebanon, Ghazanfar Roknabadi, Ahmadinejad's visit to Lebanon is aimed at fostering unity among the Lebanese, calling on all Lebanese to join hands in their resistance to Israel. ‘’What we hear these days is that the Lebanese have welcomed the Iranian president and they courageously responded to the Israeli enemy’s objection to his coming visit,’’ Roknabadi told Lebanese television on Monday. In a speech delivered at the weekend, Nasrallah said he wanted to formally thank Iran for helping rebuild Beirut’s southern suburbs and fund the postwar reconstruction in south Lebanon. ‘’Where did this money come from? From donations? No, frankly, from Iran,’’ he said. Hezbollah officials estimate that they have spent up to $1.1 billion in aid from Iran on rebuilding areas destroyed in the 2006 war. Expressions of Happiness A number of Lebanese ministers also expressed their happiness over the visit of President Ahmadinejad. Talking to IRNA in Beirut, they commented on Ahmadinejad’s two-day visit that starts on Wednesday. Lebanon’s Youth and Sports Minister Ali Abdullah described the visit as ‘important’. Appreciating the assistance of the Islamic Republic to his country, Abdullah said such a move has resulted in further progress and development of the country. Energy and Water Minister Gibran Bassil told IRNA that Ahmadinejad’s upcoming visit would bring about positive achievements for the Lebanese nation. “The Islamic Republic has always supported Beirut’s political stances and helped the Lebanese nation during crucial times,” he added. Agriculture Minister Husayn Al-Hajj Hassan also said that the Iranian president will be accorded a warm welcome by the Lebanese people from all walks of life. “Iran and Lebanon are two friendly countries,” he said, adding that Iran is the main supporter of the resistance movement. Hassan pointed out that Tehran has recently announced its readiness to equip the Lebanese Army, adding that the visit will be in line with further expansion of all-out ties between the two countries. “Iran and Lebanon will sign several agreements during the upcoming visit,” he said. Lebanese Information Minister Tarek Mitri said President Ahmadinejad’s visit to Lebanon has nothing to do with the Zionist regime. “The visit will be a sign of solidarity between the two nations,” he said, noting that the visit will create an opportunity for supporting Lebanese national unity and stability. Referring to Iran as a powerful and influential country, he said, “Iran never interferes in Lebanon’s domestic affairs.” Minister of state without portfolio, Adnan Al-Qassar, said Tehran can help reduce the existing political tension in Lebanon. “President Ahmadinejad’s visit will be important from political and economic aspects. The two countries will sign agreements in the areas of health, industry, energy, water and economy,” he said. Health Minister Mohammad Javad Khalifa also said the visit will help strengthen bilateral relations, adding that Iran is a friend of the Lebanese nation. “The Lebanese people are confident that the visit will help consolidate Lebanese solidarity,” he said. Minister of Administrative Reform Mohammad Fnaysh also welcomed the Iranian president’s visit to his country and said the visit will indicate the common stand shared by the two countries regarding conspiracies of the Zionist regime. Praising Iran’s achievements in technological, industrial and scientific areas, he said the visit will be an honor for the Lebanese nation. Fnaysh also appreciated the huge assistance of Iran to the Lebanese government and nation following the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Ukraine Train-Bus Collision Claims 40 Lives

At least 40 people were killed when a goods locomotive hit a commuter bus at a rail crossing in eastern Ukraine on Tuesday, police and government officials said. The bus, carrying 49 people in all, was thrust 30 meters along the track near the small industrial town of Marhanets near Dnipropetrovsk at around 9 am, Reuters reported. The crumpled hulk of the bus was still trapped under the front of the locomotive several hours after the accident. Television footage showed the bodies of victims laid out under blankets alongside the track. President Viktor Yanukovich, on a visit to the region at the time, declared Wednesday a day of national mourning. “A tragic event occurred this morning ... According to preliminary data, about 40 people have been killed,” Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said at the start of a Cabinet meeting. Ukrainian police said in a statement that the bus, carrying 49 passengers and a driver, was traveling from a hospital in Marhanets to another nearby town, Gorodishche. Of those killed, 38 died at the scene and two in hospital from their injuries. Nine others were being treated for injuries in hospital. Poland Road Accident Also on Tuesday, eighteen people were killed when a packed utility vehicle and a lorry were involved in a head-on collision south of the Polish capital Warsaw, local police said. “All the people travelling in the Volkswagen Transporter, 18 in total, are dead. Sixteen died at the scene of the crash,” Radom regional police spokeswoman, Magdalena Siczek-Zalewska, told AFP via telephone on Tuesday. “The lorry driver sustained light injuries. He is hospitalized and his life is not in danger,” she added. The lorry driver called emergency services to the crash, according to local authorities. The passengers were seasonal apple pickers, according to police. Police were investigating the cause of the crash that occurred shortly after 6:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) close to Nowe Miasto nad Pilica, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Warsaw. “The utility vehicle was in the left-hand lane and it had a frontal collision with a lorry in thick fog that caused limited visibility. The temperature was slightly below zero,” Siczek-Zalewska said. “The utility vehicle was not adapted for passengers and had only six seats. People were sitting on sacks and crates. It couldn’t have ended otherwise.”

Asian Water Polo Title for Iran

Iran youth water polo team reclaimed the Asian title, edging out Uzbekistan 8-6 in the final of the 2nd edition of the Asian Youth Water Polo Championship in Indonesia on Tuesday. Iran overpowered Kazakhstan, Indonesia, the hosts, and Thailand in the preliminary round of the tournament, IRNA wrote. Iran, who advanced to the next round as the top team, downed Qatar, Kuwait before reaching the final. The finalists, Iran and Uzbekistan, qualified for the 2011 World Championship. Kuwait, Kazakhstan and Indonesia stood third to fifth, respectively. Meanwhile, Iran’s Amir Hossein Baraei was selected as the top player of the tournament. Eight teams form the host, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Qatar took part in the 6-day event started on October 6th. Iran was hosting the first edition of the Asian youth event with the participation of five teams. Water polo is a team water sport. The playing team consists of six field players and one goalkeeper. The winner of the game is the team that scores the most goals by getting the ball past the opposing team’s goalkeeper into the net. Game play involves swimming, players passing the ball while being defended by opponents, and scoring by throwing into a net defended by a goalie. Water polo, therefore, has strong similarities to the land-based game of team handball.

The number of patients suffering conflict injuries has nearly doubled in recent months at a Kandahar hospital, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Tuesday. Nearly 1,000 new patients with weapon-related injuries arrived at the Mirwais Regional Hospital in August and September this year, compared to some 500 which was “hitting record highs”. The number of patients suffering conflict injuries has nearly doubled in recent months at a Kandahar hospital, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Tuesday. Nearly 1,000 new patients with weapon-related injuries arrived at the Mirwais Regional Hospital in August and September this year, compared to some 500 which was “hitting record highs”, the Red Cross was quoted as saying by DPA. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Reto Stocker, the ICRC’s chief in Kabul, said. The number of people suffering as an indirect result of the conflict “far outnumber” those suffering gunshot and explosive injuries, the Red Cross warned. “The result is that children die from tetanus, measles and tuberculosis--easily prevented with vaccines--while women die in childbirth and otherwise strong men succumb to simple infections,” Stocker said. The ICRC says it is facing increasing restrictions because of the emergence of more armed groups and a deteriorating security situation. The group just opened a seventh prosthetic center in the country, saying there was a “drastic increase in the number of weapon-related amputations in southern Afghanistan”.
