Southern Discomfort Again? A Policy Network and Fabian Society event with Lord Radice

Southern Discomfort Again, a Policy Network event in association with the Fabian Society, will present and debate the findings of the pamphlet of the same name. It will address the pressing question of how the Labour Party can overcome its recurring “Southern problem” and regain support in this crucial electoral region and political constituency.Southern Discomfort Again is part of a new and ambitious programme of work Policy Network has initiated on the future of social democracy.

Fabian Fringe Party Conference 2010

This autumn Labour party conference heralded a new leader and vision for the party.

The Fabians used this moment to debate the next chapter of Labour's future, and our headline public fringe events at Labour conference aimed to indentify the causes to fight for and how best to translate this into an electoral fight back. The Fabian Society also use the autumn conferences told hold the Coalition Government to account under the banner of 'fairness tests' with a strong presence at Liberal Democrats and Conservative Party Conference.

New leader should reject New Labour's individualism

Separate and Unequal cover A new Fabian pamphlet argues that Labour’s new leader should draw a line under the New Labour years by rejecting every-individual-for-themselves consumerism. ‘Separate and Unequal: How integration can deliver the good society’ by Nick Johnson warns the new leader that neither the left’s focus on special interest groups nor New Labour’s uncritical acceptance of individualism and consumerism will chime with the public’s yearning for a strong and shared society.

Johnson says that a coherent agenda on integration is the only way that the new leader can help build a broader public consensus for tackling inequality.

Labour needs a Gap Year to renew itself

Stella Creasy MP In a new Fabian online paper, 'Labour's Gap Year: One step to change our party culture in 12 months', Stella Creasy, MP for Walthamstow, argues that too many activists’ evenings and weekends are overwhelmed with party bureaucracy, and a year of debate, campaigning and relationship-building – and no CLP meetings – will allow Labour to renew itself.
