LAUNCESTON, Tasmania's second-largest city, is a great place to base yourself when visiting the state's north.

You don't have to go far to be impressed. Cataract Gorge is a magic natural feature within easy walking distance of the CBD. Take the 30-minute gentle uphill stroll from town to the basin - a spot which offers cafe or restaurant meals, a chairlift ride and in summer, a swim in a free open-air pool.

Alternatively, a boat cruise takes visitors partly through the gorge as well as along the Tamar River - a relaxing way to explore the city.

Launceston is also home of one of Australia's oldest breweries, Boags. Boags Beer Lovers Tour offers a taste of the sought-after drop and an insight into the brewing process.

If wine is your drop, never fear. The Tamar Valley, north of Launceston is Tasmania's most prolific wine-growing regions. The Tamar Valley Wine Route takes you past dozens of vineyards which produce premium cool-climate wines.

History abounds in the north and Woolmers Estate and Brickendon are colonial farming properties within half an hour of the city. Also nearby is the remarkable Georgian mansion Clarendon at Evandale.

For golfers, it is well worth a 90-minute drive to the charming seaside town of Bridport -- home to the Barnbougle Dunes links course -- an amazing 18-hole layout which is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the world's great courses.

Bridestowe Lavender Farm, north-east of Launceston, is another attraction well worth a day trip. As one of the world's biggest lavender farms, it is a incredible sight in summer when its fields are a sea of purple.
