Pat O’Connor
In 1986 the Irish director of A Month in the Country was forty-three years old, with shaggy greying hair, mischievous blue eyes, and the perpetually rumpled look of one too busy to bother. A journalist described him as “a genial shambles of a man.”
Pat O’Connor was smart, funny, confident, and in love with filmmaking. “My subconscious obsession with film has flourished to make me a deeply neurotic and unhappy man,” he told a reporter cheerfully.
“You kind of dream about films,” he said. By the time shooting started Mr. O’Connor had been dreaming about A Month in the Country for over a year.
