The Burnham Institute

Now known as the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, the former Burnham Institute is dedicated to the discovery of the basic molecular causes of a variety of diseases and strives to create innovative therapies that will continue in the fight against these illnesses. The institute has facilities in both California and Florida and for more than a decade has ranked number one in the fields of biology and biochemistry for the impact of its research publications, notes the Institute for Scientific Information.

The Cancer Center at The Burnham Institute is one of seven National Cancer Institute-designated "basic" cancer research centers, which means that the investigators at this facility work specifically in the area of cancer-related research rather than research combined with clinical management of cancer. Specifically, the staff at Burnham works to develop targeted technologies that deliver drugs or treatments directly to the area of the tumor with minimal affect on healthy areas of the body and other technologies that trick cancer cells into "committing suicide".

Research at The Cancer Center at the Burnham Institute is divided into four scientific programs: tumor micro-environment, tumor development, signal transduction, and apoptosis and cell death research. The more than 400 individuals that work here strive to best address these particular aspects of cancer biology in hopes that their discoveries will soon translate to a clinical setting, helping patients with all kinds of cancer, like mesothelioma (a type of asbestos cancer), to someday make a full recovery.

Like other cancer centers, Burnham hosts a number of scientific lectures, symposiums, and seminars each year. Burnham invites scientists and physicians from around the nation and beyond to join the great minds at Burnham in learning more about cancer and how to best tackle the worldwide cancer dilemma.
