Chiropractic Services for Mesothelioma Patients

Chiropractic

Undergoing treatment for certain cancers, including malignant mesothelioma, is an incredibly stressful experience for both the mind and body. For this reason, many mesothelioma patients seek to complement traditional cancer treatments with alternative treatments that can provide relaxation and increase comfort. This is referred to as integrative oncology. Integrative oncology stresses the overall goals of cancer treatment to be achieved not only through traditional therapies, such as chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation, but also through the integration of non-curative therapies within a given treatment regimen. Among the therapies being used in conjunction with traditional treatments is the use of chiropractic care.

Pain Management

The more traditional treatment therapies that are outlined in our mesothelioma treatment guide like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery have all been known to cause a great deal of side effects in patients undergoing mesothelioma cancer care. Often, the efficacy of the therapy depends on the patient's ability to cope with these side effects, as high dosages of chemotherapy and mesothelioma radiation are quite frequently required to eliminate malignant cells in the patient. In addition to restlessness, nausea, and loss of appetite, most cancer patients will complain of some level of pain. Pain can be caused by a number of different factors and it varies from patient to patient, but it is usually directly attributed to either malignant cell growth or as a side-effect of traditional treatments. For this reason, most patients will use some measure of pain management during cancer treatment.

Many cancer patients have effectively utilized chiropractic care to these ends, alleviating muscle and bone weaknesses through a licensed practitioner. Most cancer patients will complain of at least some level of musculoskeletal pain caused as a side effect of both the cancer itself, as well as that of cancer treatments. Patients able to overcome this pain will be better positioned to maintain their health as they battle this difficult disease. Generally speaking, those who are able to remain healthy through treatment are those who will achieve the most favorable results from their therapy.

Chiropractic care, however, is not advisable for all cancer patients. Those undergoing cancer treatment should speak with their primary mesothelioma doctor before commencing any alternative therapy, as the overall goals of the patient's treatment regimen should remain a priority. However, given the success in others, patients are urged to explore all options that may boost the efficacy of their treatment.
