Anti-Japan protesters burn a rising sun flag of former Imperial Japanese military, during a demonstration in Hong Kong on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010. Protesters in several cities across China marked a politically sensitive anniversary Saturday with anti-Japan chants and banners, as authorities tried to stop anger over a diplomatic spat between the Asian giants from getting out of control. Ever-present anti-Japanese sentiment in China has been inflamed in recent weeks by Japan's arrest of a Chinese captain after his fishing boat collided with two Japanese coast guard vessels in waters near an island group claimed by both Tokyo and Beijing. Japan has returned the boat and its crew but holds the captain. China has demanded his release.

In this photo taken on Sept. 15, 2010, Uotsuri Jima in Japanese and Diaoyu Dao in Chinese, one of main islands among the islets of Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, is seen from a patrol aircraft P3C of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces as it files over the water in the East China Sea during a press tour arranged by Japan's Defense Ministry. Chinese and Japanese leaders are not planning any talks next week on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, partly because of escalating tension over a collision by a Chinese fishing boat and two Japanese patrol boats near disputed southern islets claimed by both countries, a top Japanese spokesman said Thursday, Sept. 16, as Tokyo stepped up its presence in the area.
