Gillard takes Labor’s reins, but it’s the same horse, different jockey
From the newswire: Rudd’s tears at his parting press conference will be the only tears shed for the end of his prime ministership. Arrogant to the end, still believing he was God’s gift to Australian politics, he continued to claim that he was elected to be Prime Minister by the Australian people. But it was the Labor Party thart made him prime minister.

For Labor’s poll driven number crunchers, the massive dive of Labor and Rudd and in the opinion polls sealed Rudd’s fate.

Activists protest outside the Australian Uranium summit
See photos of the action by Desire here...

right11 May, 2010 - From the newswire: 20-30 people gathered outside the Parmelia Hilton Hotel where the Australian Uranium Summit was being held. The protest was to launch a joint campaign by the Conservation Council of WA (ConsCo) and the WA Nuclear Free Alliance (ANFA) to prevent uranium mining in Western Australia.

The Conservation Council’s Nuclear Free Campaigner, Mia Pepper said that "the radioactive tailings waste left from uranium mining means every single mine site will remain radioactive for tens of thousands of years."

Ms Pepper also warned that "opening up Western Australia to uranium mining will also mean opening up to renewed pressure for WA to become the world’s dumping ground for high-level radioactive waste."

Aboriginal elders such as Kado Muir, Traditional Owner from Yeelirrie WA, have joined the campaign to stop uranium mining in the state. Claiming that the current consultation with indigenous communities is unrepresentative.

Hundreds of Asylum Seekers to be refused visas
Vigil 7maySee Photos by Desire from 7 May VIGIL at Perth Detention Centre: 1 | 2 | 3

May 10, 2010 - From the newswire: Pamela Curr from Asylum Seeker Resource Centre reports that: "Over the next few weeks hundreds of Afghan Hazaras in Darwin, Christmas Island and Villawood detention centres, are going to be refused visas on the grounds that Afghanistan is "evolving" and that it is safe to return.

However, the evidence of persecution and the stories of fear of return have not changed in the past month. The Hazaras were being granted refugee visas at the rate of 100% until now. What has changed are politics in Australia and the looming election. This is the most blatant example of the politicisation of refugee decision-making.

The UN is pulling its own staff out of Afghanistan because it is no longer safe to work there and has stated publicly that they can only operate in 50% of the country. Human Rights Watch and every human rights agency reports on the growing violence and loss of civilian life.

Only Australia is proclaiming that Afghanistan is improving. It would be laughable if the consequences were not so tragic. We know that the results of these decisions will be misery, depression and worse.

Your support will be needed in the coming months as asylum seekers become political footballs kicked back and forth between Liberal and Labor politicians.

Greens MLCs sexuality smeared in The West Australian
No Homophobia! From the newswire: On 5th May 2010, The West Australian newspaper took a cheap shot at long-standing Greens MLC Giz Watson being a lesbian.

The offending article by Robert Taylor reads: "Ms Watson's own lifestyle choices are hardly mainstream..."

Taylor's aggressive and decidedly homophobic comment on Ms Watson's sexuality has nothing whatsoever to do with the issue. Irrespective of what people's opinions are on the Carles-Buswell affair, the sexual orientation of Giz Watson is not relevant to that debate, nor is a slur against lesbian and gay men in this state in a cheap attempt to brand them as somehow being neither mainstream or moral.

Letters can be sent to letters@wanews.com.au if you want to send in your complaint. READ MORE/Comment...
