7 October ~ After walking over Trent Bridge to the pub having secured the League Two title earlier this year, my Notts County supporting friends and I agreed we would be happy to take fifth from bottom as we re-entered League One after a six-year absence. And as we walked across the same famous bridge, to the same not-so-famous pub three months later, having had our arses served on a plate 3-0 by Huddersfield in our opening fixture, we said exactly the same. A quarter of the season in even the most partisan Notts fan would take survival over a second successive promotion this season. Probably because we're not good enough.
7 October ~ Brighton Bandits began their Gay Football Supporters Network (GFSN) Cup campaign on Sunday with a 3-3 home draw against Stonewall Apprentices. Having fallen 2-0 behind in the first half, the Bandits rallied and scrambled a last-minute leveller to hold the Londoners. Revamped over the summer, the GFSN Cup is now in its fifth season. It was introduced when the corresponding 11-a-side national league expanded to eight teams and has so far produced four different winners in its short existence.
7 October ~ This badge from Algeria is a warning, a warning that there are certain elements that should never be mixed. One thinks immediately of pasta and salad cream, old friends and work friends, Dizzee Rascal and James Corden. In this case, we are shown the dangers of combining electricity with water. The subject here has, as part of their evening routine, and for reasons that are unclear, left an electric guitar in the bath. This is very dangerous as the lead has been left dangling across the floor and someone could trip over this and bang their head on the tiles. This person hasn't got the sense they were born with. It's all about the formation for Trapattoni's Ireland
6 October ~ Anyone glancing across the Premier League teamsheets last weekend could be forgiven for thinking that the Republic of Ireland was in trouble going into the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifying games against Russia and Slovakia. Only four of the Irish squad - John O’Shea, Richard Dunne, Kevin Doyle and Kevin Foley - managed to complete 90 minutes. Of the others who started, Damien Duff limped off injured, Seamus Coleman is uncapped and Keith Fahey was substituted after a disappointing display.
6 October ~ It's understandable that Liverpool fans want to see the back of their current owners. But this video message, featuring assorted celebrity fans, does seem to be rather lacking in self-awareness.
5 October ~ There’s a Scottish midfielder in the Premier League who’s been an ever-present for his side this season, and who’s been garnering high praise from his manager for his skills and his work rate. Thank goodness there’s a Scotsman in form just as the national team shapes up to play away in the Czech Republic, followed by a less than easy home game with the world and European champions. Meanwhile, an Englishman is being lionised for the passing abilities that have helped take FSV Mainz to the top of the Bundesliga with maximum points from seven games. An English midfielder with passing vision? Not before time given that we haven’t seen the like since the decline of Paul Gascoigne.
4 October ~ Just under a year ago, Juan Iturbe was the rising star of Paraguayan football, a player who was handed his international debut at the age of 16. Eleven months later, and without first-team football since March, he is stuck in limbo after FIFA ruled, in the aftermath of his messy divorce from his club Cerro Porteño, that he cannot sign for another professional club until he turns 18 in June next year.
4 October ~ Brentford midfielder David Hunt writes a blog about his experiences of playing in the lower divisions. In his latest entry he discusses the tools of his trade.
