The first day of the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League is over, and here are the results from today’s eight group stage matches:

Werder Bremen 2-2 Spurs
Group B:
Benfica 2-0 Hapoel Tel Aviv
Lyon 1-0 Schalke
Group C:
Bursaspor 0-4 Valencia
Manchester United 0-0 Rangers
Group D:
Barcelona 5-1 Panathinaikos
Copenhagen 1-0 Rubin Kazan
As far as I’m aware, there is no award given to the UEFA Champions League top scorer. Which is slightly odd, because UEFA keeps meticulous records of who scored how many, and with which body part.
Top scorer in 2009/10 was Leo Messi with eight goals, and it was Messi in 2008/9 too, with nine goals. So who do you see taking the crown (FYI: there is no actual crown) in the 2010-11 Champions League? A few suggestions below:
Seems there is only one force in the world that will make Jose Mourinho bite his tongue, and that’s the fans at the Bernanbeu. Apparently Mourinho’s Real Madrid were jeered by fans during their 1-0 win over Osasuna this weekend, presumably for not playing with enough verve or providing enough excitement. When asked about the crowd afterwards Mourinho was diplomatic:
“The public can jeer if they want and I can respect it,” said Mourinho. “I work for the total satisfaction of the public and they pay me to work and not to criticise the fans. I will never say anything against the fans of Real Madrid. Is it only at the Bernabeu where they demand more? I don’t know any supporters of any big clubs that settle for less. It is nothing new for me.”
Scary scenes yesterday during an Ajax reserves game involving Evander Sno with all the hot button phrases that spawn impromptu sidewalk vigils: “collapsed unconscious”, “foaming at the mouth”, “defibrillated three times” and “heart attack”.
He’s in the hospital, reportedly doing well, where he’s expected to remain for two weeks while testing is performed.
