Obama Won’t Extend Bush-Era Tax Cuts to Wealthy
WASHINGTON – President Obama will rule out on Wednesday any compromise that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy beyond this year, officials said, adding a populist twist to an election-season economic package that is otherwise designed to entice support from big businesses and their Republican allies. Mr. Obama’s opposition to allowing the high-end tax cuts to remain in place for even another year or two would be the signal many Congressional Democrats have been awaiting as they prepare for a showdown with Republicans on the issue and ends speculation that the White House might be open to an extension. Democrats say only the president can rally wavering lawmakers who, amid the party’s weakened poll numbers, feel increasingly vulnerable to Republican attacks if they let the top rates lapse at the end of this year as scheduled. It is not clear that Mr. Obama can prevail given his own diminished popularity, the tepid nature of the economic recovery and the divisions

Mike Crapo might seem like an unlikely person to be pushing a bill to cut federal taxes on small beer-makers: A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he abstains from alcohol. Hundreds of looted artifacts returned to Iraq
6 hours ago · Hundreds of Iraqi artifacts looted from museums and archaeological sites across the country - including a 4,400-year-old statue of an ancient king stolen during the US-led invasion - have been returned to Iraq and were displayed Tuesday. Iraq is home to relics of the world's most ancient urban civilizations. But its priceless heritage has been plundered during the country's wars and upheavals, and its precious antiquities sold to collectors abroad. The US military was heavily criticized

Floods leave tens of thousands homeless in Mexico
6 hours ago · Villahermosa, Mexico | Wed, 09/08/2010 - Weeks of torrential rains have unleashed flooding in huge swaths of southern Mexico, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes. Tens of thousands more are sleeping on their roofs, refusing to abandon their possessions even as the rivers around them rise rapidly. Authorities on Tuesday started releasing 2,000 cubic meters (71,000 cubic feet) of water per second from four damns in the region that have reached capacity. That caused sever

Two asteroids to pass close to Earth on Wednesday
7 hours ago · Two small asteroids in unrelated orbits will pass within the moon's distance of the Earth on Wednesday, according to NASA. It's an unusual event that shows the need for closer monitoring of near space for Earth-threatening encounters, a scientist with the program said. The objects don't pose a threat to Earth, and they will not be visible to the naked eye, said Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near Earth Program, which tracks potentially hazardous asteroids and comets within 28 million mi

Oil industry lowballs bird deaths: study
7 hours ago · A new study says birds are likely dying in Alberta oilsands tailings ponds at a rate that is at least 30 times higher than that suggested by the oil industry. The results add weight to arguments that depending on the industry to monitor its own environmental impacts isn't working, said Kevin Timoney, an ecologist who co-authored a paper on the subject with Dalhousie University biologist Robert A. Ronconi. The paper was published Tuesday in the Wilson Journal of Ornithology. ... "Industr

Sep 07 · Why Obama Is Proposing Whopping Corporate Tax Cuts, and Why He’s Wrong By Robert Reich September 7, 2010 One would expand and make permanent the research and experimentation tax credit, at a cost of about $100 billion over the next ten years. The other would allow companies to write off 100 percent of their new investments in plant and equipment between now and the end of 2011 at a cost next year of substantially more than $100 billion (but a ten-year cost of about $30 billion since those w

Sep 07 · It hurts because two big groups are being alienated by their words. Both are attacking institutions that in my mind hold our country together. Even if they are just liking their own publicity or feeling the power of being "in charge"....or whether they are advocating for their true beliefs. It doesn't matter, really. What matters in this case when so many people are hurting financially and worried about the future is the perception. Reality matters, but in cases like this perception is mor

Sep 07 · In times of violent conflict it is very common for people to think of the other people as barbarians – that is, people of different races, cultures, nationalities, religions, skin color, you name it. It is much easier to think of them as the barbarians, while ignoring evidence of barbarity on the part of people more like oneself – people of a race and nationality similar to oneself. Tom Engelhardt expresses this idea in his book, “”: Ordinarily in our world, the barbarians are them. They a

Sep 06 · The Paul Ryan budget is still talked about approvingly by Republican candidates but just six months after the plans were published they still will not talk about what it means. Now two mnths before an election there is little hope of Republicans discussing their tax plan. If you are not a rich American you will face a Republican Tax Bombshell. People need to be reminded exactly what the Republican proposals mean to them individually. Mother Jones did an article about it in March. The figures
