'Hillbilly heroin' fugitive wanted across 5 states arrested

A MAN wanted by police in South Australia and by police in five other states has been arrested in New South Wales.

The man, 47, was arrested in Armidale in the New England Tablelands about 2pm after police searched his car and allegedly found syringes and packets of oxycontin, which a NSW police spokesman said was colloquially known as "hillbilly heroin".

When the man was arrested it was discovered six states had 27 warrants for his arrest.

It will be alleged the man has been avoiding NSW police since 2002.

Police also searched a caravan at a nearby caravan park where the man had been staying.

He was charged with larceny, possessing a prohibited drug, receiving stolen property and shoplifting, driving unlicensed and stating a false name and address.

A NSW police spokesman said it was likely the man faced similar charges here.

The man was refused police bail and will appear in the Armidale Bail Court tomorrow.

Police in SA, Queensland, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and Victoria have all been informed of the man's arrest.
