Job vacancies unchanged in August

THE number of jobs on offer nationwide was unchanged in August following a surge in July, after retail sector hiring stalled and offset a hefty recruitment drive in the mining sector.

IPA Recruitment said the number of jobs on offer in August was unchanged from July, a month that saw a 13.9 per cent jump in job vacancies.

IPA CEO Tricia Phillips said the flat result came because the retail sector was hesitant to hire, while mining recruitment remained healthy.

"On the upside, we're seeing a continued demand in HR, professional services, utilities and government industries," Mrs Phillips said.

"The healthy state of mining is translating into a significant recruitment drive there. In terms of current roles on offer, there is a steady stream of HR, admin support and blue collar roles available.

"On the downside, retail and consumer sector hiring has stalled. Companies are doing little more than replace staff attrition."

Ms Phillips said she expected the result to be temporary, with the Christmas shopping season around the corner.

"Hiring will pick up as we move closer to Christmas, when there is an increased demand for temporary staff."
