Apple beware: World's first iPad lookalike goes on sale - China's iPed

  • iPad knock-off on sale in China's south
  • iPed costs $126, a fifth of iPad price
  • Device runs Google's Android system

APPLE might have sold two million of its new iPad tablet computers in less than two months, but it has a Chinese challenger - the identical looking iPed.

Apple's iPad is not even on sale yet in China but the iPed can be bought in Shenzhen in the country's south for ¥713 ($126), almost a fifth of the price of the new Apple gadget.

The world's first iPad lookalike runs on Google's Android operating system and is apparently powered by an Intel chip.

Pictures of the iPed, filmed by Japanese TV news and posted on YouTube, show the gadget being sold in a Shenzhen computer mall in packaging that even looks like an iPad box.

The change in vowel is seemingly the only major difference in appearance between the two computers.

i always find these 'look at the chinese knock-off' stories when australia wouldn't survive without chinese products. does anyone else here feel we should thank china that they make our products when their workers get paid 30cents an hour yet if it were made in australia they'd get paid 100 times that. china makes it possible for australians to pay nothing for products...yet still we whinge about the cost of living...go figure...

See what happens when you outsource your manufacturing to China in an effort to save a buck :-) you will probably find the same supplier makes the same screen as the iPad, same buttons .....

May look the same but judging by speed of graphics in the video it definitely doesn't have same screen, CPU or RAM as its much much slower than real iPad - typical Chinese knockoff but I'd still buy one

Both are just expensive toys. Even the cheap one. I had a play the other day with the IPad and its fine for a trip in a plane when you don't want to use the on board entertainment but really you would tire of it pretty fast

Wow, another reason why Japan is #1 in Technology (in my opinion). I will never buy an iPad, just to send the message to Apple that it is a fad device; but if I can get an iphone that doesn't fit into my pocket - but isn't big enough to be useful as a laptop - for $125 or so, then I'll buy one for a really lavish beer coaster.

The biggest problem with cheap knockoffs was their feature set was limited by software. Now that every man, women, and their dog can put android on a device for free, we'll probably see a big standardisation between most tablets and phones (except apple of course). This is good because companies have to compete with hardware spaces to differentiate their model from someone else, and that drives inovation! I'm looking forward to having CHOICE. Brng on the android revolution!

Well that didn't take long...if it's anything like the "generic MP3 player versus iPod" battle over the years, it'll be heaps cheaper and have twice te features. EG: for years even the cheapest MP3 player had XD slots for memory expansion and a built in FM radio, yet iPods still don't have expandable memory and only recently got an FM radio feature. Bring it on! This "iPed" has an Intel chip and runs a good operating system...They'll sell hundreds of thousands of these things!

Not that this fake piece of junk, will be any worry to apple, but seriously the more of this that goes on, the more likely companies will move their manufacturing AWAY from china. I'm currently living here in China, I can tell you that most Chinese people know the difference and will buy the Ipad for 5 times the cost. It's never about the product it's always about "face" and who spends the most and looks the best. People who will buy such an item are people in the west or tourists who are to cheap to buy quality products or the real thing. This is just another example of a Chinese company breaching copy right and technological property rights, and there government doing nothing about it.

It looks same and quality looks OK with intel processor and andriod OS. Just concerned if they will have Apps store as well. Its just like people who cannot afford Macbook would choose Acer or Toshiba Notebook !
