iPad owners 'over-achieving selfish elites'

IPAD owners are six times more likely to be wealthy, highly educated and sophisticated 30-50 year olds who value power and achievement.

They're also selfish and unkind, according to a survey of 20,000 people conducted by US consumer research firm MyType.

MyType spokesman Tim Koelkebeck gave his unflattering appraisal of iPad owners on the company's blog after the firm released the results of the survey online.

But what about the iPad's critics?

Mr Koelkebeck said 96 per cent of those don't own an iPad, but they're generally independent-minded young people who "shun conformity", he said.

They're also listed in the survey under "Geeks" - people interested in video games, computers, science and the internet.

The study was called "Prevalence of iPad Owners and Critics by Psychographic Segment" and divided the respondents into "iPad Owners" and "iPad Critics".

I have one and I am not wealthy or a workaholic, but moderately educated, in the 30 to 50 bracket and definitely not hell bent on power !. I defined the iPad as just another tool to use at work and home and at the moment it's been very effective as it contains all my technical manuals. And it's also the first Apple product I have bought.

Oh please I can say as a iPad owner (which I am typing on right now) I am not a 'over-achieving selfish elite' and neither are any of the people i know who own a iPad,and I am not rich I am a student who saved up to get this device and I couldn't be happier with it and people who criticize this device only do so because they secretly want one when compared to a laptop or even a net book the iPad is cheap and does so much more so these critics are simply wanna be iPad owners and need to go talk about something else.

I had an experience with an iPhone and iPad owner only yesterday. The experience made me shudder. This is the kind of computer illiterate who drives an SUV and needs you to set up a GMail account for them because they can't do it themselves (I'm not joking). Some of my customers are Linux users. Most of them are certainly not geeks and most of them use Ubuntu. You might want to ask why in 2010, a generation that grew up with computers and so are without excuse are also computer illiterates who will buy an empty shoebox if it has an Apple logo in it and can't even set up a GMail account themselves? I mean come on, people still don't know what a 'web browser' is! The iPhone and iPad using yuppie I dealt with yesterday had no clue what I was talking about when I mentioned the web browser on her iPhone. Err... Safari? Can you imagine some 15 to 20 years after the Ford Model T was first made people not knowing what an 'automobile' is? This is the kind of market that Apple is appealing to.

Having sold so many in Sydney when they first came out, though the stock was sent in dribs and drabs, (a cliff hanger effect by Apple –Yawn) I could easily tell the type of characters the people buying them had – Most were GEN Y’ers that really didn't know much about the product (self indulgent creatures) and all wanted to be noticed as the First to have an Ipad (another word to add to my Word dictionary). I think your article is very true, but you forgot to mention one more undeniable truth , Most appeared to have money to throw away, Now that makes them poor savers indeed! I guess that’s why we call ‘em Gen WHY?

We aren't wealthy (she's unemployed) workaholics (I work from home), but we're certainly not geeks. I'd agree. From a technical perspective, you could always do most of what an iPad does 5 years ago on slates and tablets. Yet no interest from people who find the iPad appealing. Current tablets leave an iPad a long way behind in the dust from a capability perspective. Apple has a long history of appealing to people interested in IT but relatively tech-unaware, like teachers. It isn't necessarily an iPad thing. There are many famous YouTube videos hanging it on the lack of capability of Macs compared to PC's for example.

Ha ha ha, it doesn't "seem like an oversized iphone" to us geeks. It IS an oversized iphone. It's running the same iOS for godsakes. It's not a full blown OS. It's running an iphone/ipod touch OS. Cos that's exactly what it is. But one day, someone may actually port a full OS onto it. Oh wait, you'll probably get that with the 4th revision of the iPad. Sucks to be early adopters with anything Apple. Already got an iphone and want an ipad?? Take your simcard out, and viola, you've got a non 3G, wireless ipad!! TA DAAA!! Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Apple or the iPad, I just don't think it's the magical wonderful device Steve touted it to be.

Look I like the look of the iPad and will not hesitate to get one, but only when they have released the 3rd version of it. Apple's business model is to assess what people want and then drip feed these minimums (eg camera, usb port, ability to use it as a phone, etc) as the sales of the older model slow down. So I would not say that I am either elite or geek critic, just practical. The truth is that Apple is a technology trend setter.

She also loves computer games (she's on her 4th gameboy, got her first one in the early 90s). As a pensioner on a government pension I really doubt she's part of an "over-achieving selfish elite"... she was a stay-at-home Mum, 3rd generation Aussie and raised 10 kids in Country Australia. I also don't know how buying her one makes me "selfish" either.... It's just a good device that's easy to use and has an easy-to-learn interface, perfect for her needs. Sounds like these critics need to get a life!

Sorry to all the "normal" mac owners, but when you spend so much money to buy into a product with such a self-important identity as Apple then you get tarred with the same brush as the "selfish elite" conformists who made your new toy a household name. Of course rich people have them. They are the people who can afford to treat themselves to a device which has no real purpose. Trying to make some business processes to utilize the iPad is proving difficult in our organisation because the iPad restricts basic functionality of a computer. I'll have what you're smoking, thanks. Can an iPad make Skype video calls? Can I connect a USB device to it? Can I load any type of software on to it that I want? Can you replace the battery on an iPad yourself if there is a problem with it? Can you upgrade the hardware over time yourself? Just a few examples of Apple and their proprietary hardware/software. They nailed it right on the head with the comments on what technological "advancements" it misrepresents. The technology that comprises the makeup of the ipad has been in other devices for almost a decade. Video calls? Nokia has been doing that for years. PC's of 10 years ago had more RAM than this piece of junk. Touch screen? old news. Being locked into 1 app store that is controlled and monopolised by apple, nothing new either. People think they are buying this because they like the title of "non conformist" but you're wrong, by buying this, you ARE conforming, to all the other mindless drones that follow steve jobs dribble and lap it up like good little lap dogs. Doesn't bother me though, people like me don't necessarily hate the device, we do know it has it's place and it's uses, however they are extremely limited.

I suppose one shouldn't take these studies seriously but they tend to fail completely in allowing for any complexity in people whatsoever. When I first saw the iPad, I was seduced and intent on buying one ... until I realised that I couldn't explain why convincingly to a friend and that it was therefore an emotional buy. I then looked at it more critically and realised that, under the touchscreen and sexy look, it offered a lot less functionality than a regular laptop and was essentially an overgrown iPhone. Anyway, the point is that I had mixed feelings towards the iPad and I am sure most people do. Its stupid to suggest that people make purchasing decisions to maintain consistency with some ridiculous 'geek' or 'elitist' pose; most people assess the product rationally (which incidentally is why most people don't own an iPad). In any case the media seems hellbent on making us all purchase Apple products, with 'news' about iPhone updates or (flattering) iPad owner personality types regularly making the main page of The Age, Herald Sun etc. Since when is it the media's role to do Apple's marketing for them?

The statement from Aiden.S of Frankston "when compared to a laptop or even a net book the iPad is cheap and does so much more" is absolute crap. I'm sorry but a laptop or even a netbook can do so much more, and many are much cheaper than an iPad ever will be. You're only kidding yourself if you believe otherwise. As a super “geek” myself, I have a laptop that drives my incar-entertainment via a touchscreen and can control DVD, MP3s, DivX movies, Internet, Email, TRUE GPS guided navigation, multiple reverse cameras, controls my phone via bluetooth, and even monitors cars engine status and tire pressures. I'd like to see an iPad do that! and I have a hot wife to boot :P Speaking personally, I can’t find a single use for the iPad. If I want to do something on the move, and I’m not in my car, I use my phone (and it’s not an iPhone either, but that’s a whole other story about why that is useless for me too).

Actualy, people who criticise the device are MORE likely to be criticising its LACK of flexability, multi-tasking, USB ports etc. It is simply a device that does not address any need in the market (tablet computers were around for ages before the iPad)and it simply does not have the flexability to achieve acceptance amoung those who actualy know how to customise their computer so that it runs as they want, and not how Apple wants. I have absolutely NO desire to own an iPad, and am happy with my DS (which now also functions as a PDA due to modifications I made), Laptop and PC. I have no need for a device thats ONLY redeeming feature is that it is 'cool'.

Fascinating: we just can't move away from putting people into convenient little boxes! “As a mainstream, closed-platform device whose major claim to fame is ease of use and sex appeal, the iPad is everything that they are not.” I don't want an iPad: it's true that I am also interested in science, computers, the internet and video games. I do like to have the ability to tweak my tools. It's also true that, unlike the iPad, I am not "Easy to Use". However, I do have sex appeal (and not just to my husband, bless his heart!). So am I an independant iPad-bashing, geek, or not? Or am I something else altogether...and what about my friends, those who own iPad, who are not wealthy, nor power freaks, and are generous thoughtful people? That said, I can't deny a smidge of smug at the 'finding' that iPad owners/lovers are selfish and unkind!

I'd be happy to buy one, if it was a phone and had a front camera, USB and memory card slot... 3G connection, but can"t be used as a phone. HELLO! Apple.... do you want me to buy this one, only to put more devices on the next one and then want me to buy that also? USB, memory card slots and mobile phones are existing tech that you already have used.

Aiden, this article is market research, not opinion. Sure there are differences, but overall the major groups are what are being reported. Apple are fantastic marketers, but it is not always about the product. If Apple's products are so great then why is Apples Operating System global market share only 6% (as at June 2010). The reason I think is 'style' and 'price'. Apple's original base core were Graphic Designers, but now I feel the PC is on par with Apple, graphics wise, there is no reason for a premium. I think most people will wait for the PC tablet versions to come out. At least they will get a web cam and a USB port. For me the iPad is an overpriced oversized iPhone. But then I don't have an emotional attachment to the product/brand. I am who I am, and I don't need a product to define me.

My g/f "accidently" bought an ipad and we love it for what it is. Those who bash it are jealous and fearful of what it represents to their anti corporation mentality. I'll be the first to admit it is no perfect device but it is certainly more secure than my windows pc's for using on the internet, easier to carry than my laptop (Toshiba tablet) and I'm sure competition will make them better as time goes by. I don't like Steve Jobs or Apple as a company but they are sucessful and if I didn't like them enough, I'd not buy one. It is like smart phones, you don't want one then they become indespensible.

The iPad is an overpriced, dumbed down netbook with a touchscreen covered in aluminium. Seriously, it is the type of device that I would give to a 4 year old, the thing doesn't even have a USB port, let alone a file manager that you can manipulate without jailbreaking.

To Aiden, you can get laptops for the same price or cheaper than an iPad, and *laptops* can do more. They can multitask just for starters. To Real World, the iPad may be technology but it is not new nor cutting edge. HP had tablet devices 10 years ago with more features! The only thing that makes the iPad stand out is because of aesthetics, the Apple marketing machine and all you fanboys (and girls) who *think* they need the latest Apple device. Caveat Emptor :P Shop around people!

who wants to get a ipad? funny part is if someone post something funny about apple products apple fans think its all because someone hate apple. LOL all these products have good and bad points and this is just a simple survey. No one needs to worry about it. "Apple is not perfect" "I dont like I dont buy it"

Whoever says the iPad is an "oversized iPhone" does not own one and therefore their criticisms are meaningless. Other companies are still scrambling to release similar products.

I think the "geeks" aren't easily amused by Apple's flash marketing... Most of the stuff that apple releases can be bought at a much lower price with many more features from other vendors and half the time the 'groundbreaking technology' that apple totes has already been around in other devices for many years.

My 2 year old learned most of her alphabets, numbers, shapes and colours, a good number of common transport, and more... This interactive device without using a mouse and a keyboard shows how intuitive the device is for those not familiar with computers. Although it has it's shortcommings compared to a laptop, it already paid itself in my case.

I have one. I find it more convenient for carrying around to meetings then a laptop. I even find it useful for typing up notes using the onscreen keyboard. Better battery life then my laptop as well. Can it do everything my laptop can do? Of course not. But it does what it does very well. And yes I'm a geek. IT degrees and industry experience up the wahzoo.

Not surprised ipod owners are wealthy. You'd have to be to spend that much on something that is all style over substance. I've been looking for a reason to justify getting a new phone (probably an htc desire) ever since I got my iphone. I won't make the mistake of getting a restrictive, overpriced and overhyped apple product again. Not when competitors do the same things better and without unreasonable restrictions.

I used mine at a conference recently. It fit great on those little armrest tables in the room. Onscreen keyboard was fine for notes. Was able to jump to to the relevant websites and twitter when I had to. It was nice not having to fight for charging stations between sessions. My netbook was fine, but my programs expected full res screens and looked a bit naff on the little netbook screen. The iPad apps were designed for the iPad limitiations and look good. I figure it's just another tool. And yes I'm a geek. It was a geek conference :)

Sounds like every apple user fullstop. Apple always has been about marketing and less about substance, that's is how they have been able to fool people with substandard products. Nothing Apple brings out is ever ahead of the pack. ipods - mp3 players where around before the pod. Iphone - wanna be smart phone Ipad- thinks it's the bees knees but nothing more than a waste of money
