Darwin dreams to be UFO hotspot

THERE are calls for a UFO convention to be held in Darwin after the latest sighting in Territory skies.

Radio identity Pete Davies yesterday said it was time to "challenge Roswell and Wycliffe Well" and make Darwin the UFO capital of the world.

"We've got the Convention Centre here in Darwin, why not use it for a conference for UFO spotters," he said, according to the Northern Territory News.

"People all over the world are interested and obviously they travel a fair bit to see a UFO - we could invite them all around."

Davies said UFO spotting could be a new tourist attraction for the Top End.  "Of course we'd offer free parking for the guys coming to visit in spaceships," he said.

The Northern Territory News revealed yesterday UFO spotter Erik Black, of Brisbane, had spotted an "ominous hamburger-shaped light" at Humpty Doo.

The sighting - after a tip-off from Top End UFO-ologist Alan Ferguson - ended Mr Black's 30-year search for a UFO.  He said he was already looking into booking flights back to Darwin.

"Humpty Doo is the place where I saw my first UFO after so many years of searching - of course I'll come back, it's all happening here," he said.

Mr Ferguson said he was excited about the idea of holding a UFO conference "right where the boys from up there come to visit".

"I've been telling people for years the Territory is the place to be," he said.  "But they need to look up."

Mr Ferguson said he would be happy to be a guest speaker in a conference with leading UFO-ologists, to "tell 'em all what's going on here".

He said his last sighting was a month back, when two unidentified silver objects travelled across the sky.

"When we talk about UFOs people often claim they are nothing but aircraft from air shows, but they don't understand that it's the air shows that attract the boys from upstairs to come down to have a look at what we're doing."

Mr Ferguson yesterday travelled to the UFO hotspot Wycliffe Well, 400km north of Alice Springs, to co-star in an SBS documentary about the sightings in the little town.
