AN EXPLOSION has ripped apart a Kilkenny pizza shop and put its manager in hospital.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene on David Tce about 11.15pm following reports of an explosion.

The blast blew out the front windows of the Pars Pizza store and left the interior blackened and twisted.

The explosion, fire and smoke also damaged awnings and the roof of the store and adjoining shops.

One man, believed to be the pizza shop's manager, was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The hospital would not reveal his condition when contacted by AdelaideNow.

MFS and police fire cause investigators are working to determine what triggered the explosion.

Employees from an adjacent service station said they saw the shop on fire after the explosion.

Fouad Fandi said motorists who stopped to help the injured man, who they had found in the middle of the road immediately after the blast.

Mr Fandi said those witnesses thought the force of the explosion had thrown the man on to the road.

"He (the pizza shop manager) is from Iran and he's only been in Australia for eight months and at the pizza shop for three months," he said.

"He's a really nice man. He comes in a lot and always talks to me."

Mr Fandi said he believed a woman who often worked in the pizza shop had not been in the store when the explosion happened.

AdelaideNow understands the shop was probably shut when the incident occurred.
