Warpaint 006 e1287165317731 Best New Music Video of the Week: Warpaint

It’s that time again. It’s time for us to pick our favorite music video of the week! A lot of good material was released over the past few days but we had to narrow it down to one. We based our decision on creativity, music, and most importantly why you won’t see it on MTV…but should!

And the pick of this week is…

Funeral Party: BeatCrave Fav

Thursday, October 14, 2010 2:57PM - By Sasha Patpatia

funeralparty2 sl101410 Funeral Party: BeatCrave Fav

Funeral Party is a Whittier, California band that emerged from the post-punk, hardcore, and metal rock scene that dominates their East L.A. roots. The four piece band, including Chad Elliott (vocals), James Torres (guitar), Kimo Kauhola (bass), Tim Madrid (keyboards and percussion) rock out in a different genre– their indie/alternative beats and melodies dominate their songs with a hint of punk rock influencing the pace.

Funeral Party  started out completely DIY, playing gigs every weekend since the band’s creation and even borrowing equipment from friends for live shows. Their non-stop energy coupled with melodic and exciting tunes have rocketed Funeral Party into the forefront of the L.A. music scene, and has even earned them a fall tour with 30 Seconds To Mars starting in November. Check out Funeral Party in the Beatcrave Fav series below!

The Lonely Wild: BeatCrave Fav

thelonelywild The Lonely Wild: BeatCrave Fav

They might list Woody Guthrie, Wilco, and Ennio Morricone as their three major influences, but The Lonely Wild has a sound like no other.  And if their adept playing of guitar, keys, and percussion doesn’t leave you in awe, the inexplicable heart and soul they put in their music is sure to have you hooked.  ”Dead End” lingers upon a dreamy, emphatic woefulness that captures the very essence of that mood between loneliness and care-free intrigue.  “Right Side of the Road” is alternative country at its best, with soft vocals and an old western-movie feel that complements the witty lyrics “it’s all a game when you’re born on the right side of the road.”

The Lonely Wild have released their first two singles, and we can’t get enough of their of their unique style.  Check out The Lonely Wild in the BeatCrave Fav series below!

Albums of the Week: The Bad, The Good, The Great- Kid Cudi Vs. You, Me, and Everyone We Know

Albums of the Week: The Bad, The Good, The Great Kid Cudi Vs. You, Me, and Everyone We Know

A fresh round of new album releases this week shows us the consequences of some things not washing out (at least for You, Me, and Everyone We Know), even Trent Reznor can’t resist facebook (at first denying the offer, then accepting and scoring it “a shade darker”), and despite being arrested for drug possession and pining emotionally about the past, Kid Cudi’s musical odyssey continues as a bold step into a newer, deeper sound.

Monotonix CP 10 10 2010m Culture Collide Festival 2010 Photo Gallery: Sunday

Well, folks. This wraps up our coverage o Filter’s first Culture Collide Festival. If you’ve been checking our photo galleries and reviews out  from Friday and Saturday, it’s not hard to tell that it was pretty much a great success. Bringing people and their culture together through music is always a great thing and it’s always a good time.

Sunday was the big finale to the entire festival which actually started on Thursday and, of course, we were there to capture it all for you through great photos and in-depth reviews. The block party last night basically combined a lot of the artists who had already been playing at various venues throughout the weekend but there were a few big name acts who came out especially for this outdoors festival including Cass McCombs, Tokyo Police Club, Phantogram and Jenny and Johnny. Fran Healy also provided an intimate performance at the Echo Park Church. Check out our photos from Sunday’s block party below!

Culture Collide Festival 2010: Fran Healy

Monday, October 11, 2010 5:56PM - By Carl Pocket

Fran Healey CP 10 10 2010f Culture Collide Festival 2010: Fran Healy

After enduring the technically plagued set by Jenny and Johnny, the entire Culture Collide Festival moved indoors and into a house of worship for the rest of the evening. The pews filled up and it quickly became a standing room crowd for the singer and guitarist of the band Travis, Fran Healy.

While some may have caught Fran and Dougie doing an acoustic set featuring the history of Travis songs in the past, it would just be Healy tonight. Without his band members there it was fitting that he was in the comfort of a house of God. He could have felt safe. Instead, the charming Scot started rambling about how insecure he was without his mates and that he would have to open with one of the songs made famous by his band.
