How Hollywood Couples Make Long Distance Work
By Jo Piazza Posted Aug 13th 2010 05:00PM
How do they do it? While we may give a lot of flack to Hollywood's finest for the comparatively short shelf lives of their romantic relationships, we know that they face trials and tribulations in coupling that the average person does not. Not only does their partnership face constant scrutiny from the prying eyes of the press, but their jobs dictate they will spend a significant amount of time apart on film sets across the country and around the world. On-again, off-again couple Drew Barrymore and Justin Long allow their art to somewhat imitate their life in the upcoming romantic comedy 'Going the Distance,' about the difficulties of ... you've got it ... long distance relationships.
Back before the days of Brangelina, Angelina Jolie used to boast that she would fly for eleven hours each Friday just to see then-husband Billy Bob Thorton for ten hours of wild lovin' before flying back to the set of 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.' The couple would also write love letters in one another's blood. That relationship didn't turn out so hot, so it seems that simple might just be better when it comes to a LDR.
So, what's the secret to staying together when work forces you apart for long periods of time? Here's what some celeb couples do to keep their love fresh across thousands of miles.
'Mamma Mia' co-stars Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper say they keep their long distance communication real, maybe a little too real. The pair Skypes when she is in New York and he is in London, but after three years of dating they don't do anything especially sexy in front of their web cams.
"The other day, I was cleaning, he was cleaning. We couldn't see each other -- we were just scrubbing away and talking like we were in the same room," Seyfried told InStyle Hair magazine.
Hilary Duff's hockey-playing fiance, Mike Comrie, has to spend his season in Ottawa, which has Duff commuting up north during the winter months. In the meantime, they too make use of technology to stay in touch.
"We iChat a lot ... iChat's great!" the starlet told E! online. "We text message, call. I go visit as much as I can. But we're in a very comfortable place, so it's not nerve-racking. We both want it to work and care enough about it, so it finds a way to work itself out."
'Twilight' star Robert Pattinson has the opposite problem. He is with girlfriend Kristen Stewart, as the pair finish filming on the 'Twilight' saga, all the time. Pattinson thinks a little long distance loving would actually improve his relationship.
"It is hard, but I guess in someways being away from someone is always ... if you really like them it makes, in a strange way, makes it better because the more time you spend away the more you're thinking of them, the more you want to see them again, so I guess being away ... not spending too much time with someone is always a good thing to do," the British actor said back in March. He might be on to something.
Eva Longoria Parker has said that her long distance relationship with ball-player husband Tony Parker is what makes her marriage work.
The 'Desperate Housewives' actress says that she divides her time between LA, where she shoots the hit show; Texas, where Tony plays for his basketball team; and her in-laws home in France.
"[When we"re together] it is a honeymoon, because we only have three days together and we hardly fight because we know we don't have much time. All the little things that couples argue about -- we let them slide."

Long distance relationships can work as long as you feel secure within that relationship. If you aren't sure how you feel about the person you're with, then distance can create an impediment and for some, too much distance for a long period of time can cause too many temptations that can destroy anything you may have had going with that other person.

I am sorry but military families deal with spouses being gone for 18 months at a time in a potentially dangerous place. Please don't make a big deal of the trial and tribulations that actors/actresses have. They are paid well for their sacrafices whereas our military personnel are not. People have to get priorities straight!

Not to ruffle the feathers of Jo Piazza but, in the very recent past,Drew Barrymore has bombarded the media and her fans with overt hints about her lesbianism. I'm just sayin'.
