JUDY COLLINS - Greatest Folk Songs (2011)

Singer Judy Collins was, along with Joan Baez, one of the two major interpretive singers to emerge from the folk revival of the late '50s and early ‘60s. Like Baez, she began singing traditional folk songs, then moved on to popularize the work of contemporary singer/songwriters, even writing her own songs occasionally. Unlike Baez, she used her classical music training to evolve into being a singer of art songs and show tunes, sometimes employing semi-classical arrangements. In a career that began at the end of the 1950s and was still going strong more than 50 years later, she consistently performed 50-80 concerts a year, and she recorded extensively, her commercial success reaching its apex from the late ‘60s to the mid-‘70s, as six of her albums from the period achieved gold or platinum sales. Although she was primarily an albums artist, she also enjoyed a few hit singles, notably her Top Ten, Grammy-winning cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," which helped establish Mitchell as a songwriter; an a cappella version of the hymn "Amazing Grace"; and the show tune "Send in the Clowns," which led to a Song of the Year Grammy for its composer, Stephen Sondheim... - allmusic.com

LINDA RONSTADT - The Very Best Of (2002)

Linda Ronstadt, who emerged from SoCal's vaunted early-'70s country-folk scene, became the American female rock superstar of the Me Decade. After the initial success of the Stone Poneys' Michael Nesmith-penned "Different Drum," Ronstadt expanded her horizons through interpretations of a long string of successful pop and R&B; covers. Along the way she championed emerging songwriters like Warren Zevon ("Poor Poor Pitiful Me") and contemporary favorites like Neil Young ("Love Is a Rose") in the bargain. As the formula waned with the changing tastes of the '80s, she briefly turned to new wave before stepping boldly back to the pop standards of the '30s, '40s, and '50s. Unfortunately, this collection inexplicably skips over that three-album collaboration with arranger-conductor Nelson Riddle, a body of work that presaged the 1990s' lounge-pop revival by a full decade--and outclassed it by miles. It also eschews a compelling contemporary Latin chapter of her career in favor of her winning collaborations with Aaron Neville ("Don't Know Much" and "All My Life") and less successful AC fodder like "Winter Light" and "Somewhere Out There" with James Ingram. A good primer to Ronstadt's immense vocal talents and recording history, but one that's flawed by some crucial missing chapters. - amazon.com

TERRY JACKS - Seasons In The Sun (1974)

Terrance Ross "Terry" Jacks is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer and environmentalist. "Seasons in the Sun" is an English-language adaptation of the song "Le Moribond" by Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel with lyrics by American singer-poet Rod McKuen. It became a worldwide hit in 1974 for Terry Jacks and became a Christmas Number 1 in 1999 for Westlife. The Jacks version is one of the fewer than thirty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) copies worldwide.

2008 release, the first time on CD for the debut LP by Canadian singer/songwriter Terry Jacks who had previously been a member of The Poppy Family. The title track gave Terry a #1 across the globe reaching the top spot in the UK, USA, Australia, and Germany, to name but a few countries, on it's way to selling over six million copies. The single also topped the charts in Canada and remains that country's largest selling single ever. The four bonus cuts, all appearing on CD for the first time, include Terry's last Bell Records single "Rock N Roll (I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life)" which hit #25 in his native Canada. - amazon.com

RHYTHM KINGS - Struttin' Our Stuff (1977) thumbupthumbupthumbup

While the former Rolling Stones bassist's prior solo releases were rather weedy singer-songwriter efforts, Struttin' Our Stuff is a pleasant diversion that's more along the lines of Wyman's '80s side-combo Willy and the Poorboys. On Struttin' Our Stuff, the ex-Stone teams up with an impressive assortment of famous friends for an impressively played but enjoyably casual set of rootsy originals and classic covers, including a soulful reworking of the '70s Stones tune "Melody." In addition to Wyman's trademark bass pulse and occasional vocals, the album features guest guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, and Albert Lee, frequent Stones sideman Bobby Keys on sax, and Procol Harum's Gary Brooker on piano. Guest vocals come from English R&B; great Georgie Fame, Ace/Squeeze/Mike and the Mechanics singer Paul Carrack, and talented newcomer Beverly Skeete.

Digitally remastered edition of this 1997 album from the former Rolling Stones bassist and his Rhythm Kings. Struttin' Our Stuff was the band's debut album and is packed with lively numbers that capture the spirit of the Blues from different eras. Among the dozen tracks are jive tunes like 'Jitterbug Boogie' and slow Blues such as 'Bad To Be Alone'. There are also 'covers' of classic hits including Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Green River' and the R&B; standard 'Tobacco Road'. The band clearly loves playing together and features an all-star cast of seasoned players, notably Georgie Fame on organ and vocals. Among the guitarists, Eric Clapton, Albert Lee and Peter Frampton contribute some hot solos, and there is an impressive roster of brass players and backing vocalists. - amazon.com

ALBERT COLLINS - Frigorific (2011)

There has never been and may never be again a bluesman quite like Albert Collins. "The Master Of The Telecaster" was born on October 1, 1932, in Leona, Texas. A cousin of the legendary Lightnin' Hopkins, Collins emerged with a blues sound and style all his own, featuring a combination of icy echo, shattering, ringing, sustained high notes, an ultra-percussive right-hand attack, and an unheard-of minor key guitar tuning (taught to him by his cousin Willow Young). Deeply influenced by T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker and Gatemouth Brown, Collins absorbed the sounds of Mississippi, Chicago, and especially Texas. He formed his own band in 1952, packing clubs around Houston. In the early 1960s, Collins' "cool sound" instrumentals like the million-seller Frosty (recorded with a young Johnny Winter and Janis Joplin in attendance at the studio) and follow-ups Sno Cone and Thaw Out were all over R&B; radio. Soon he was sharing stages with his idols Gatemouth Brown and T-Bone Walker. Then, in the mid-'60s (following a move from Texas to Kansas City to California), Collins broke into the rock 'n' roll world, releasing three albums produced by members of Canned Heat, and began playing the San Francisco psychedelic circuit. But Albert's greatest success came after he signed with Alligator in 1978 and cut ICE PICKIN''. It won the Best Blues Album of the Year Award from the Montreux Jazz Festival, and was nominated for a Grammy. His following Alligator albums helped earn Collins every award the blues world had to offer. And, along with Johnny Copeland and Robert Cray (who decided on a career as a bluesman after seeing Collins play his high school prom) Collins cut the Grammy-winning SHOWDOWN!. Even after he was firmly established as a major modern bluesman, Collins never got too big for his fans and friends, and never took things easy. And he never relinquished the wheel of his battered tour bus that he loved to drive so much. Along with his band, The Icebreakers, Collins' live shows -- driven by his kinetic stage presence -- were legendary testaments to the power of the blues. With his untimely death in 1993, Albert Collins left behind a blues legacy that continues to amaze and delight blues fans all over the world. - amazon.com

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Hard Bargain (2011) thumbup

Produced by Jay Joyce, Emmylou Harris' 21st studio album features the striking Harris originals "Darlin' Kate" (written for Kate McGarrigle) and "The Road" (written for Gram Parsons). On Hard Bargain, her third Nonesuch disc, she offers 11 original songs - three of them co-written with Grammy and Oscar-winning composer Will Jennings - that touch on the autobiographical while reaching for the universal. She pays tribute to lost friends like her legendary mentor Gram Parsons ("The Road") and her frequent collaborator, the late Kate McGarrigle ("Darlin' Kate"), and also finds poignancy and fresh meaning in events both historical and personal. On "My Name Is Emmett Till" she recalls a pivotal act of violence during the civil rights movement in a heartbreakingly plain-spoken narrative, told from the victim's perspective; on "Goodnight Old World," she fashions a bittersweet lullaby to her newly born grandchild, contrasting a grown-up's world-weariness with a baby's wide-eyed wonder. Few in pop or country music have achieved such honesty or revealed such maturity in their writing. Forty years into her career, Harris shares the hard-earned wisdom that comes with getting older, though she never stops looking ahead. In addition to the luminous originals Harris composed, the title track comes from Ron Sexsmith - a folk-rock ballad Harris had been coveting for a long time - and uplifting closing number "Cross Yourself" was contributed by Joyce. - cduniverse.com

TAB BENOIT - Medicine (2011) thumbup

Tab Benoit is the wildly popular musician who hails from Houma, Louisiana. His distinct cajunified blues and soul have been winning fiercely loyal fans for decades now. A simple listen to any one of his many popular CDs, or a visit to a live show will make a loyal fan out of anyone. Benoit’s latest album, "Medicine", is a fantastic, powerful addition to Tab’s already robust repertoire. Almost nobody can beat Tab Benoit for playing raw, dirty-sounding roadhouse blues. There is something about when he gets to rocking that gets everybody going in the way the best blues and rock ‘n’ roll should. Even his guitar tone has that slash-through-your-speakers/earbuds psycho tone that everyone from Travis Wammack to Johnny Guitar Watson to Earl King perfected in the middle of last century. Benoit’s new record, Medicine, is his latest entry to a great body of work. It’s got some great rockers and shuffles and all-out, shake-what-your-mama- gave-you boogie tunes.

Tab Benoit's seventh solo album features 11 tracks, seven of them co-written by Benoit and Anders Osborne, recorded with a rock-solid roots band of Benoit on guitar, Brady Blade on drums, Ivan Neville on keyboards, and Michael Doucet of Beausoleil on fiddle.

FRANK SINATRA - My Way: The Very Best Of Frank Sinatra (1997)

This collection provides, arguably, the best overall mixture of 'old and new' Sinatra, ever assembled on two CDs. The 46 tracks here include all-time best-sellers disdained perhaps by some of us, as 'weak tea' compared to the strong meat of the Great American Songbook otherwise well-represented in this collection. Yet those same commercial hits, struck the chord with 'baby boomers' needed to re-establish Sinatra's career in the Beatles' era and beyond to a fifth, then a sixth decade of public performances.

My Way: the Best of Frank Sinatra collects 46 tracks culled from the estimable American singer's vast back-catalogue for a remarkable two-CD set. Sinatra was one of the greatest voices of his or any generation, and for the most part, these songs are some of Old Blue Eyes' finest works: among the best are "Come Fly with Me", "Lady Is a Tramp" and "I Get a Kick out of You". - amazon.com

MANNY CHARLTON - Americana Deluxe (2007)

Manny Charlton is notable for being a founding member of and the lead guitarist for the Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth from 1968 to 1990. After leaving Nazareth in 1990, Charlton played some solo shows on the Scottish club circuit, and released his first solo album Drool in 1997, on the Red Steel record label with Neil Miller on vocals. The following year, he relocated to Texas, where he formed the Manny Charlton Band (MCB). The new outfit released a pair of albums — Stonkin and Klone This — before disbanding in 2003. Charlton then focused on solo material again, releasing Say The Word on the Scottish label River Records in 2004. 2005 saw the release of Sharp, which is on the whole a covers album, including Tim Hardin's "Hang On To A Dream" and Bob Dylan's "Shelter From The Storm". Later that year, Charlton completed the follow up to Sharp, the aptly named Sharp Re-Loaded. In early 2006, Charlton joined the Swedish rock band From Behind who also have the ex-Samson frontman Nicky Moore on vocals. From Behind released their debut album titled Game Over, and toured in support of the album around Europe. As of 2007, Charlton is no longer part of the From Behind project. His latest solo album 'Americana Deluxe' was released early April and contains covers of classic songs such as "The Sea Of Love" and Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk". - wikipedia

LARRY CARLTON WITH SPECIAL GUEST ROBBEN FORD - Live In Tolyo (2007) thumbupthumbupthumbup

With blues/jazz guitarist Robben Ford's Soul on Ten (Concord, 2009) receiving widespread attention, it's a good time to look at Live in Tokyo, a somewhat overlooked but unmistakably smokin' 2007 release from another West Coast guitar god, Larry Carlton. Carlton invited Ford to join his band for some dates in Tokyo in the fall of 2006, and it would be hard to find two more compatible yet distinctive guitarists for a set that ranges from down-and-dirty blues to burning samba and a lot in-between. The two go back over 30 years, sometimes playing with the same artists, just not on the same sessions. Both worked with singer/ songwriter Joni Mitchell, and while Carlton was delivering early career-defining moments with Steely Dan, Ford was adding some signature licks to Little Feat. Ford would ultimately move in a more decidedly blues-centric direction while Carlton ventured near smooth jazz territory (but his playing always elevated it above the pack). For Live in Tokyo, both find common ground that leans closer to Ford's stylistic direction, with undeniably virtuosic playing but, as ever, taste trumping technique in a set of largely original material.
