SHARAN was established in 1979 
with humble beginnings. 
Nevertheless, over the years, 
it has successfully responded 
to a city's call. With a huge 
influx of migrants from 
neighbouring states, the number 
of slums in the city is 
dramatically on the increase. 
As a result, inadequate housing, 
sanitation, lack of drinking water, 
poor health facilities, lack of 
literacy, drug abuse and HIV/AIDS 
have become major problems. 
In responding to the concerns of 
the community, SHARAN has 
evolved programmes of a holistic 
and comprehensive nature that aim 
at providing a better quality of 
life to the urban poor.
