from Bamako fo Dakar: caravan-tour for freedom of movement and fair development

25.Dec.10 - From February 6th to 11th, 2011 the 11th World Social Forum will take place in Dakar, the Senegalese capital. This is why from mid-January bus and car caravans will start their journey to Dakar from several places in Africa.
One of those caravans is the WSF Citizens Caravan for Freedom of Movement and Equitable Development, which will begin in Bamako. It expects 200 to 400 participants mainly from African (especially West African) countries. There will be several actions, for example against the EUs border protection agency Frontex and illegal deportations from Mauretania to Mali, which are sponsored by the EU. There will also be political assemblies with the local population at the caravans stopping points. They will refer to the reasons for flight and migration as well as the situation of refugees and migrants, be it in transit countries or in the EU.  [read more]

5 years after Ceuta & Melilla - mobilization in Mobilisation Oujda/Maroc

25.Sep.10 - These days mark the 5th anniversary of what has been later coined by the mainstream media as a "storm on Fortress Europe". In deed, several hundred migrants had crossed the outer border of the European Union around the spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in a self-authorized and self-organized fashion.

The planned events will also shed light on the 5 years of the existence of the Frontex mechanism, the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union, of which the competencies and are ceaselessly strengthened for the militarization of the EU borders and the outsourcing of the treatment of the question of migration. [read more]

It is hard to say how the situation will develop this summer. It should be obvious though that this is not solely a Greek crisis. The Euro is stumbling in Greece, but it is the Europe of Maastricht which strikes back.
But it is also the Europe of Schengen, the Europe of border regime and migration control, which is active in Greece. After the routes crossing the west atlantic and the mediterranean sea have been largely blocked, Greece has become the main gate to the EU for refugees and migrants, due to its geographical position and uncontrollable sea borders.  [read more]
