'Last Exorcism' jumps on Chatroulette

By Michael Sullivan

To keep up these days, a savvy distributor knows it has to utilize social networking tools to tub thump a release. Enter "The Last Exorcism."

In anticipation of the horror pic's release, Lionsgate has started running promotions on Chatroulette, the website that randomly connects visitors via webcam to other users from around the world. Lionsgate is using the platform to scare up an audience, featuring a fake user who screams at visitors and plugs the site thelastexorcism.com (in case you don't run into her yourself, you can see a video of the promotion below).

Given the ubiquity of the book in airport kiosks, more than a few passengers likely appreciated the breaking headline.

Rooney Mara to star in 'Dragon Tattoo' franchise

Rooneytilt_boffo Sony and director David Fincher have tapped Rooney Mara to star opposite Daniel Craig in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

Mara, who appears in Fincher's upcoming pic "The Social Network," will play the title character in Columbia's adaptation of author Stieg Larsson's best-selling series.

Mara joins a "Tattoo" cast that includes Craig, who stars as reporter Mikael Blomkvist, Robin Wright Penn and Stellan Skarsgard. The 24 year-old actress was said to be Fincher's #1 choice for the role of Lisbeth in Sony's franchise.

Girldragoncover_boffo2 Originally adapted for the bigscreen in Sweden, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" series has become a top priority on Sony's list of upcoming tentpoles, which also includes a forthcoming "Men in Black" installment.

Scott Rudin is producing "Dragon Tattoo" alongside Cean Chaffin, Ole Sondberg and Soren Staermose. Mikael Wallen and Anni Fernandez are exec producers.

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" tells the story of a legally challenged journalist (Craig) who attempts to solve a decades-old murder with the help of a mysterious computer hacker (Mara).

Steve Zaillian penned the script and is in preliminary talks to adapt the sequel, "The Girl Who Played With Fire."

Sony will release "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" on December 17, 2011.

Mara is repped by WME.
