Woman killed after driving car wrong way on to busway and colliding with bus at Woolloongabba

A WOMAN is dead after driving into the wrong lane and colliding with a bus on the South East Busway in Brisbane's south overnight.

Police are investigating whether heavy rain contributed to the crash, which occured about 8.40pm on Tuesday night at Woolloongabba.

The woman, the sole occupant of the Kia Rio, may have taken a wrong turn and ended up travelling along the bus lane in the wrong direction.

A police spokesman said the bus driver reportedly saw the car heading toward him and made an effort to steer the bus to the left.

He said people can now only speculate on the reason why the car swerved onto the wrong side of the road.
"But we will never know," the officer said.

The woman died at the scene a few hundred metres north of the Buranda Bus Station.

The South East Busway is strictly reserved for buses only.

There were around 25 passengers on board the bus at the time but it is believed no one was injured.

The busway was closed for several hours but has since re-opened.

The police forensic crash unit is investigating.
