Your School: Where does it rank - and do you care?

Today marks the launch of the government’s new (somewhat controversial) My School website. For those who haven’t yet heard of it, the new website contains information about almost 10 000 Australian Schools, including:

  • the number of students at each school;

  • the number of teachers and other staff at each school;

  • the socio-economic status of the students attending each school;

  • school attendance rates; and

  • Year 12 attainment rates.

The tax office has begun 2010 with a renewed get-tough strike against the operators of illegal early-release super schemes.

These ubiquitous schemes – which are no doubt one of the most-serious destroyers of retirement savings – could increase in number this year following the recovery of the sharemarket.

In short, super has become a more attractive picking with the rise in share prices.

As Smart Investing has written in the past, operators of illegal early-release schemes often target unsophisticated members of large super funds, promoting ways to gain immediate access to their preserved super funds before retirement.
