Second Australian tourist in a week plunges from Croatian cliffs

AN AUSTRALIAN tourist is fighting for his life after falling from a cliff in Croatia, PerthNow reports.

The incident is the third tourist fall in a week, and the second such incident to involve an Australian.

The 25-year-old man from Western Australia fell down a ravine and landed on the roof of a concrete building in the town of Split on Tuesday night.

He was allegedly drunk and unaware of the height of the cliff when he leaped into the ravine on Tuesday at about 2:00am local time on the Katalinica coastline south of the city, according to police sources.

He suffered multiple bone breaks and was connected to a respirator to help him breathe, hospital sources said.

"A consular official from the Australian Embassy in Zagreb traveled to Split to provide consular assistance to the man and the man's family," a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said.

Three foreign tourists have now fallen from the eastern European nation's coastal cliffs in a week.

Australian Tanya Hearnden, 24, of Melbourne, slipped and fell down a cliff in the backpacker resort town of Dubrovnik on Monday.

Doctors removed her spleen, a kidney, realigned both her broken arms and pinned her knees.

On Thursday, Ukrainian tourist Sveti Ivan, 30, tripped and fell from the ancient fortress walls in Dubrovnik.

He was announced dead at the scene by ambulance officers.
