Racist patriarchy in Israel
Richard Seymour

July 21, 2010 - This is an example of racist patriarchy. A man, Sabbar Kashur, has been imprisoned for doing nothing more than having consensual sex with a woman, whose name has not been disclosed. Both parties were of age, and no one alleges that the transaction took place without consent. Initially, this was not clear, as the original complaint suggested that there had been some coercion. But as the woman's testimony in the course of the trial made clear, the only crime that Kashur, now convicted of rape, committed was to have allowed the woman to believe that he was Jewish, when in fact he was an Arab. He did not even actively perpetrate a deceit, merely chatted the woman up and didn't say "by the way, I am an Arab"...

July 21, 2010 - Cancer, leukaemia and infant mortality are all increasing in the Iraqi town of Fallujah, which saw fierce fighting between US forces and Sunni insurgents, a new survey says. Still one of the most dangerous places in Iraq, doctors have been reporting a large number of birth defects since the 2004 offensive...

Criminalizing Arab political activity in Israel
By Omar Radwan

July 21, 2010 - On Wednesday 28th July, a unique event will take place at the House of Commons. Three Arab members of the Israeli Knesset, Jamal Zahalka, Haneen al-Zoabi, and Talab al-Sana will hold a seminar discussing the significance of Israel's self-proclaimed "Jewish character" and what it means in practice for the Palestinian minority within Israel's 1948 boundaries. The seminar will focus on the discrimination encountered by Israel's Arab citizens in light of Israel's claim to be the only democratic state in the Middle East. This claim was always inaccurate and today it appears increasingly hollow, with a campaign of persecution and intimidation in full swing against Palestinians with Israeli citizenship and their elected representatives and the ongoing occupation and colonisation of the West Bank, which denies even the most basic rights to the Palestinians there...

UN Chief Dilly-Dallying on Panel to Probe Israeli Killings?
By Thalif Deen

July 21, 2010 - When the Security Council condemned the killings by Israeli military forces of nine Turkish civilians on a flotilla of ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza last May, it also released a presidential statement "taking note" of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s proposal for an international investigation of the incident. But nearly two months later there are no signs of the proposed "prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation." After an earlier devastating three-week Israeli military offensive against Gaza in late 2008 - which left more than 1,400 people dead and over 5,000 injured - the Human Rights Council in Geneva appointed a three member fact- finding mission, led by Judge Richard Goldstone...

Afghan resistance statement
Statement of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan concerning Kabul conference

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
23medium_taliban.jpg

July 21, 2010 - ... In fact, by making such futile efforts as holding Kabul conference, America wants to distract the global attention from its shameful defeat in Afghanistan, not to put an end to the agony and tragedy of the people in Afghanistan. Thus, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as it has always done, regards the US invaders and their allies the only and main cause of the distraction, chaos, disorder and misfortune in Afghanistan; and considers the key solution to all this the unconditional and immediate withdrawal of all the occupation forces from Afghanistan. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is aware of the decisions made in the Kabul conference and the America’s prolongation of the war and its chaotic strategy, therefore call on the world not to support and rubberstamp its plans and decisions blindly but offer logical solution to help resolve the issue which may be satisfactory for both Afghan masses and the foreigners...

Kabul conference is surreal theatre featuring the defeated Western allies in competitive denial
Gerald Warner

July 21, 2010 - We are watching history in the making in Afghanistan; but it is history of a certain stamp – the slow-motion unravelling of a disaster. The international conference meeting in a palatial hall in Kabul has all the unreality of similar doomed assemblies in the past. Think of the States General of France in 1789, the Duma in Russia in 1905 – you get the picture. Here we have high-ranking international diplomats and foreign ministers, the supposed "movers and shakers" of the world, but they have encountered the immovable and the unshakeable: the victorious Taliban and the treacherous warlords of Afghanistan...Hamid Karzai, whose puppet regime makes the average Sicilian municipality look squeaky clean, is proclaiming his resolve to reform corruption, the civil service, the economy, agriculture and education. Considering he has been in office, if not in power, for eight years, that has all the novelty of Labour’s recent general election manifesto...

July 21, 2010 - Consider this scenario – a girl meets a guy while out shopping. They make eye contact, they flirt, he tells her he’s a business mogul about to close on a billion dollar deal. she’s the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen, he’s been searching for her all his life, etc etc, you know the drill. They go to a nearby building and have sex. Both adults, both consenting. Days pass and the girl realises she wasn’t the woman of his dreams and he is never going to call her - in fact his name is Bob and he works at the newsagents around the corner. The girl then proceeds to file a criminal complaint against the guy for rape and indecent assault. The judge, while admitting the sex was consensual, accuses the guy of misrepresenting himself and sentences him to 18 months in prison for rape...

July 21, 2010 - Henry Miller once said that the purpose of the artist is to "inoculate the world with disillusionment." We are in desperate need of disillusionment today -- disillusionment on a vast scale, disillusionment as a constant discipline. Arthur Silber is one of the greatest such artists now at work, and he has just released a remarkable piece aimed at one the deadliest illusions of our time: the myth of American Exceptionalism. In July 2010, it published the latest in its "Am I Not a Human?" series titled, "The Suffering of the Palestinian Child under the Israeli Occupation," saying: Palestinian children grow up "under the Israeli occupation, surrounded by cruelty, oppression, killing, starvation and destruction." This is not true. This is a struggle between people who are oppressed and an oppressor, people who are under colonialism and a colonialist, people who are suffering from apartheid and a system and a force that is practicing apartheid and hurting the future of both Palestinians and Israelis and destroying, because of this apartheid system, the whole potential and possibility of two-state solution. July 20, 2010 - The President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama is no different from his predecessors, especially when it comes to Palestine and Iraq. When he was running for president he deafened our ears with slogans displaying his opposition to the war. Many believed him and hoped that he would stop the war in Iraq, but slogans were slogans, empty and meaningless, because he chose the way of George W. Rachel Corrie's hometown divests from Israel
Palestine Note

July 20, 2010 - The Olympia, Washington Food Co-op board of directors met last week to make the final decision to endorse the boycott. "A couple of board members were concerned about what will be the financial effect on the organization, but it’s minimal," board member Rob Richards told Haaretz. "For me personally there is a moral imperative that goes beyond any financial concern. So we decided to adopt the boycott which went into effect the next day." The boycott in Olympia, which is right now only enforced in two grocery stores, will likely have little direct effect on the divestment effort. But the board decision is symbolic, both as part of growing move in America and also because of what Olympia is: Rachel Corrie’s hometown. Last month, the student body at Evergreen State College in Olypmia, where Corrie studied, passed two declarations calling for the school "to divest from companies that profit from Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine" and to ban Caterpillar equipment from campus. It was a Caterpillar bulldozer that killed Corrie as she tried to prevent it from demolishing a home in the Gaza Strip...

July 20, 2010 - ...We must always remember the scope of the horrifying effects of the U.S. invasion and occupation, including the murder of over a million innocent people, together with the all-encompassing devastation of an entire country as set forth in that same article. Such is the limitless power of delusion on this scale: a blood-drenched tragedy of world-historical proportion becomes "an extraordinary achievement," and a criminal war of aggression is transmuted by the alchemy of cultural myth-making into a "success." July 20, 2010 - The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) condemns the early release from prison of the Israeli soldier that murdered photography student and ISM volunteer Tom Hurndall in Gaza in 2003. The Israeli press yesterday reported that Taysir Hayb will be released three years early from an already short eight-year sentence. Who's aiding Judaisation?
Nicola Nasser

July 20, 2010 -Since 1860, when the American Jewish tycoon Judah Touro donated $60,000 -- a fortune for that time -- towards the construction of the first Jewish settlement outside the old walls of Jerusalem, public and private American funds have aided the creation and territorial expansion of Israel. Israel today is the foremost recipient of US aid. According to a USAID green paper, between 1946 and 2008 Israel has received more aid than Russia, India, Egypt and Iraq. In fact, the US has poured more money into Israel than it did into the Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of Europe after World War II. However, a recent New York Times article adds a new dimension to the story. On 5 July, the Times reported that, over the last decade more than 40 American groups have collected more than $200 million in tax-deductible gifts for Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, indicating that the US Treasury is effectively aiding and abetting illegal settlement expansion and the Judaisation of Jerusalem...

July 20, 2010 - In the history of the "War on Terror," few stories are as disturbing as that of Abu Zubaydah. Seized in Pakistan in March 2002, Zubaydah was initially regarded as a "high-value detainee" of such significance that the Bush administration conceived its torture program specifically for use on him. But the case against him has steadily unraveled over the years, as officials -- first in the Bush administration, and then under President Obama -- have conceded that his significance was monstrously overstated, and that he was not a member of al-Qaeda, was not involved in planning any international terrorist attacks, and had no advance knowledge of the 9/11 attacks...

July 20, 2010 - The action that we recently undertook on the terrain of the old Warsaw Ghetto -- to spray the words "Liberate all ghettos" in Hebrew and "Free Gaza and Palestine" in English -- has been used by some commentators in Israel and the Jewish community in Poland to accuse us of anti-Semitism. Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, called the action "a provocation that perverts the history both of the Holocaust and of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict," and the graffiti as "tainted with anti-Semitism."...These reactions do not come as a surprise to us. Our action was deliberately accountable which was why it was documented on film with statements of explanation. We wanted people to know who was responsible and the thinking behind it. First, the wall we chose is already a public space of artistic expression. We have been portrayed as if we have grafittied a grave or a memorial -- this is not the case. Israel's Judaisation of Jerusalem
Middle East Monitor
20alaqsa.jpg

July 20, 2010 - In the framework of Israel's policy of Judaising Jerusalem and making the Holy City its eternal capital, Israel has pursued a number of measures following its occupation and illegal annexation of East Jerusalem in 1967: 1 - The confiscation of land "in the public interest", using a British law of 1943 and building 15 illegal settlements, covering an area of 24 sq km, or the equivalent of 35% of the area of East Jerusalem's total of 72 sq km. 2 - The use of the Planning and Building Law, which has been applied to Jerusalem since 1976, which has turned around 40% of East Jerusalem a designated "green" zone to prevent Palestinian Arabs from building on it, but which has not stopped Israeli settlements being built on the same land (Har Homa and Reches Shuafat)...

Israeli Soldier Who Killed British Activist Released Early from Prison
Bart Farrell

July 20, 2010 - An Israeli Army committee cut the prison sentence for Taysir Heib, a former soldier, who was convicted of manslaughter and other charges in relation to the shooting of a British peace activist. A former Israeli soldier will be released years earlier than expected after he was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of British peace activist Thomas Hurndall. Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that former soldier Taysir Heib received an eight year sentence in 2005 for manslaughter, in addition to obstruction of justice and giving false testimony. Military Advocate General Avichai Mendelbit, a Brigadier General, opposed his early release, but the decision to shorten his sentence was made by an army committee...

West Bank settler waste... a disaster ravaging farms and generations
Middle East Monitor

July 20, 2010 - The Zionist settlers across the West Bank constitute a major threat to the Palestinian territories, particularly with regard to the dangers posed by the industrial waste being pumped onto the land from their factories. This waste water pollutes the subterranean water reservoir as it flows into valleys and agricultural land and from there into the underground water flow causing great harm to both farmers and the environment. For example, raw sewage from the illegal settlement of Jalbou in Jenin is polluting the agricultural land in the area. While it is extremely dangerous to discharge human waste into open fields, it is particularly hazardous when the effluent consists of industrial waste water and solids, mineral paints and various other metals, as is the case with the discharge from the settlement of Barqan in Qalqilya...

One-state debate explodes Zionist left myth
Ma'an news
20onestate1220.jpg

July 20, 2010 - A fascinating debate has entered Israel’s political mainstream on a once-taboo subject: the establishment of a single state as a resolution of the conflict, one in which Jews and Palestinians might potentially live as equal citizens. Surprisingly, those advocating such a solution are to be found chiefly on Israel’s political right. The debate, which challenges the current orthodoxy of a two-state future, rapidly exploded traditional conceptions about the Zionist right and left...

THINGS MY CHILDREN NEED TO KNOW
Husayn Al-Kurdi

July 19, 2010
Dear Children: there are some things you may not know
but need to know
That flowing through your veins
is a long river of ancient blood
running through historical cities which smoulder on fire
Our features are most distinctly characterized
by our almondine brown eyes,
eyes which have seen too much
eyes which lapse into dreams
whether open or shut
Arab eyes...

Occupation forces target PFLP in Beit Furik
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

July 19, 2010 - Occupation soldiers conducted a campaign of arrests targeting leaders, members and supporters of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Beit Furik village near Nablus, and kidnapped nine residents, seven men and two women, including recently freed prisoner Comrade Linan Abu Ghoulmeh. Mayssar Itiani, a Palestinian prisoners' activist, reported that the occupation forces invaded Beit Furik at 2 a.m. and broke into several homes. They invaded the home of Ayman Abu Ghoulmeh, who had been released from Israeli prisons only one month prior after 4 and one-half years in occupation jails, kidnapped him, and confiscated his father's identity card...

Obama's War on the Internet
The Ministry of Truth

Philip Giraldi
19internet_censorship.jpg

July 19, 2010 - The Ministry of Truth was how George Orwell described the mechanism used by government to control information in his seminal novel 1984. A recent trip to Europe has convinced me that the governments of the world have been rocked by the power of the internet and are seeking to gain control of it so that they will have a virtual monopoly on information that the public is able to access. In Italy, Germany, and Britain the anonymous internet that most Americans are still familiar with is slowly being modified. If one goes into an internet café it is now legally required in most countries in the European Union to present a government issued form of identification...

Impeach Obama?
Cindy Sheehan

July 19, 2010 - Recently, I received an email from Veterans for Peace (VFP) Chapter 136 in Central Florida asking me for an endorsement of its resolution to impeach Barack Obama...In 2007, I announced my electoral challenge to Speaker of the House, Nancy "Impeachment off the Table" Pelosi because I felt so strongly in this Constitutional remedy to a criminal executive. Did I believe I would win? Just about as much as I believe that Nancy will impeach someone from her own party if she wouldn’t impeach a scoundrel like Bush. But like VFP’s resolution says: "We want to emphasize that our chapter’s call for the Impeachment of President Obama for war crimes is not based on whether or not Impeachment is likely to occur, but rather our call for Impeachment is based on what we as Veterans For Peace feel is our duty in the case where war crimes are being committed under the command and authority of any United States President."...

How Jay Bybee Has Approved the Prosecution of CIA Operatives for Torture
Andy Worthington

July 19, 2010 - Last Thursday, Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, released the previously undisclosed testimony of Jay S. Bybee, delivered to the Committee on May 26 as part of its investigations into advice given by Justice Department lawyers to the Bush administration regarding the use of torture in the "War on Terror." Bybee, now a judge in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, was the Assistant Attorney General in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel (the department that is supposedly obliged to deliver impartial legal advice to the Executive branch) on August 1, 2002, when two notorious memos — commonly known as the "torture memos" — were issued, largely written by OLC lawyer John Yoo, but ultimately signed off by Bybee...

Generation without future, a future without generations: the endless suffering of Afghan children
By Gabriele Maranci
19bala_baluk_wounded.jpg

July 19, 2010 - Nine and a half have passed since the US and allies invaded Afghanistan. American and European soldiers (among whom the most affected are the British) sacrificed their lives for political games, international interests and local corruption, as well as strategic failure. While an unstoppable abacus precisely tracks each soldier’s death, little is really known about the civilian fatalities, which suggests a silent confession that, in this war, human blood weighs differently between the civilizer and the (un)civilizable Afghan...

Omar Khadr Accepts US Military Lawyer for Forthcoming Trial by Military Commission
Andy Worthington
19khadrdec2008-300x222.jpg

July 19, 2010 - In a turnaround from the defiant position he took last week, when he sacked his US lawyers and stated that he would either boycott his impending trial by Military Commission, or would represent himself, Omar Khadr, the Canadian citizen who was just 15 years when he was seized in Afghanistan in July 2002, and who is accused of throwing a grenade that killed a US soldier, Sgt. Christopher Speer, has told his Canadian lawyers that he is now prepared to be represented by his US military defense lawyer, Army Lt. Col. Jon Jackson. His trial, which was scheduled to begin on August 9, will now begin at a later date, although pre-trial hearings will resume on that date. This is probably a wise move on Khadr’s part, although it does shut the door on the perhaps remote possibility that his defiance could have prompted the Obama administration to put pressure on the Canadian government to demand his repatriation before the trial begins...

Video: Daughter of Mossad Chief: I Refuse to Enlist in the Israeli Military
rageunderground

July 19, 2010 - Omer Goldman, has had to confront the values of her own family. She is the daughter of the former deputy head of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service and who is still considered one of the most powerful men in the Israeli security system....In her declaration of refusal she stated:"I refuse to enlist in the Israeli military. I shall not be part of an army that needlessly implements a violent policy and violates the most basic human rights on a daily basis. Like most of my peers, I too have not dared to question the ethics of the Israeli military. But when I visited the Occupied Territories I realized I see a completely different reality, a violent, oppressive, extreme reality that must be ended"...
