New CD Album Releases, 4-27-2010: Drawn Together soundtrack, Mary Chapin Carpenter The only real new album that looks even vaguely interesting is The Age of Miracles by Mary Chapin Carpenter. Haven't heard any of this, but she's about something. I don't think of her as a big commercial powerhouse, but I note that this CD is as high as #2 at Amazon.
Other than that, the fun new thing is Drawn Together: The Uncensored Soundtrack CD. I don't know that it's great Art, but there were some fun and catchy songs in this evil tv series. Hearing it just as music, I'm particularly amused with the Disney princess ballad parody "Black Chick's Tongue." Imagine Ariel re-writing "Part of Your World" after a hot makeout session with the black chick from Josie & the Pussycats. Note that this release of the late series co-incides with the straight to DVD release of The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie!

New CD Album Releases, 4-20-2010: Merle Haggard, AC/DC, Willie Nelson The main likely couple of worthwhile new albums this week are from the old hands of country. Over his long career, Willie Nelson has substantially personally broadened and re-defined Country Music. These are mostly fairly straight ahead acoustic arrangements of country, folk and blues standards. I don't know when he's written a particularly memorable new song recently, but as a singer he has definitely aged like vintage wine. Glad to hear him singing stuff like "Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down."
I Am What I Am is Merle Haggard's 875th album. Haven't heard anything from it, so can't say anything about it one way or another.
AC/DC don't seem to want to put out a proper greatest hits album, but seem to like throwing out hashed up re-packaging of their oldies for cheesy movie soundtracks, in this case Iron Man 2 [Deluxe Edition] [CD/DVD].

New CD Album Releases, 4-13-2010: Tom Lehrer, Jeff Beck, Natalie Merchant Not much big and new this week, but let's just take a minute to dig on the genius of The Tom Lehrer Collection. This collection features 26 cuts, largely recorded in the 1960s. This has pretty much all the obvious cuts. By his count, for being such a well known name over many years, he only published 37 songs.
Best of all, this comes with a bonus DVD including live 1967 performances in Oslo of, among other classics, "The Masochism Tango" and my personal springtime anthem "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park." Sweet.
"If, after hearing my songs, just one human being is inspired to say something nasty to a friend, or perhaps to strike a loved one, it will all have been worth the while." - Tom Lehrer
Emotion & Commotion is the first new album from Jeff Beck in seven years. I wouldn't think of Beck as a big time commercial artist, but I note that he is as high as #4 currently at Amazon.
The #1 seller at Amazon at the moment is Leave Your Sleep from Natalie Merchant. This two CD set is based on musical adaptations of 19th and 20th century British and American poetry. What I'm hearing sounds pretty listenable, though I'm not sure how memorable any of it will prove to be. It has just a little bit of Renaissance fair flavor to it, but not to a stilted degree.

New CD Album Releases, 4-6-2010: Bobby McFerrin, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Slash There's some bigger names, but way the most likely sounding new thing that you might need to hear this week is Vocabularies from Bobby McFerrin. This is an artist who has never gotten the respect he deserves even for his hit, the now 20+ year old "Don't Worry, Be Happy." That was a beautiful and memorable song, and he has been consistently interesting and listenable.
This new album is his first in some eight years, and obviously meticulously constructed. The record company verbiage suggests that he used 50+ singers recorded by ones and small groups to get some 1400 total vocal tracks. I don't know about all that, but it surely sounds like something I need to hear more of.
Sharon Jones has never been a big name, but she's a real honest to G-d soul singer, a rarity today. Plus, she made the best song of 2004. That should rate some interest.
Slash has an eponymous solo album this week. Dig the co-creator of "Welcome to the Jungle" and other GnR classics, but Saul doesn't have anything jumping out of the previews that sounds like a real song.

Hamid Karzai versus the Taliban, or joining them? The US backed weak and seemingly hopelessly corrupt Afghanistan government of Hamid Karzai looks less and less useful to anyone by the day. Indeed, Karzai is so desperate at this point that over the weekend in closed meetings with legislators, he was threatening to absolutely JOIN the Taliban that we (and theoretically he) has been fighting for years, in reaction to pressure from the US and the Obama administration.
As a rightwing nutjob, my first instinctive reaction is to blame Obama for this. President Obama is surely the worst amateur hour in foreign and military policy that we've had since at least Jimmy Carter. Perhaps his heavy handed public and undiplomatic gestures have screwed the pooch with a foreign leader who is obviously in a very difficult situation trying to hold on to authority that he barely ever had over the territory. I mean, Obama and his crew say unbelievably stupid things to and about foreign leaders and policy on a near daily basis. It's just been a few days since Obama himself was publicly suggesting that the British should somehow and for no obvious reason open some kind of negotiations over the Falkland Islands stuff from a quarter century ago. WTF?
Then again, maybe this is not at all fair to Obama. Perhaps this guy is just hopelessly weak and corrupt, and it was just foolishness of the Bush administration to back him in power and hold him there when he doesn't seem like he's ever done us much good. Someway, the US certainly does need to hold whatever government in Afghanistan - especially one that is there in significant part because of our backing - more accountable for helping fighting the jihadists. The Karzai government surely hasn't been a hell of a lot of help. I mean what kind of partner does Obama have to work with here?
This brings me to my second instinctive reaction to this, which is to put these comments entirely on the speaker - and take them at more or less face value. If Karzai makes repeated noises of even talking like he's sympathetic to the Taliban, at this point that is pretty much totally unacceptable. If ol' Al were commander in chief, it wouldn't take very much crap like this to get Karzai and a bunch of his crew killed by big US bombs. What to think?
Perhaps it's just as well that I'm not commander in chief.
New CD Album Releases, 3-30-2010: Erykah Badu, Alan Jackson, Usher, Joan Armatrading There are a lot of big names with new albums this week, but Erykah Badu is the one making the ink. She has a new album New Amerykah, Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh. She actually had a hit with "On and On" once, but it's been a little slow sense. Or at least I for one can't remember any other song she's done, and I know I've heard a couple of her albums.
That being the case brings us to the desperate need for publicity that became the famous "Window Seat" nude video shoot at Daley Plaza in Dallas. Sad to see ol' girl reduced to working the pole, but what're you going to do? A gal's got to earn a living. Of course, I'm just kidding. I realize that this was not just desperate whoring but a Serious Political Statement that simply required her to take off all her clothes in public for the camera.
On the hopefully more artistically substantive level, This Charming Life is something like the 20th album from Joan Armatrading. I mostly think of Armatrading as being an acoustic folky singer-songwriter, but what I'm hearing from this album sounds surprisingly musically aggressive. It surely merits a good listen.
Freight Train is the 18th album from Alan Jackson. I like the guy and all, but for the life of me I don't see why people (or women) are so enamored of him, as most of his records pretty much sound near exactly the same.
I would otherwise have little interest in the cheap and cheesy r&b; drama of Usher, except that he was characterized and parodied so lovingly well in The Boondocks episode "Tom and Sarah and Usher" that just getting to type his silly name gives me pleasure. The Boondocks are just that good. Actually had me listening to frickin' R Kelly at one point.
Oh yeah, his new album is called Raymond v Raymond. It is his seventh album. Dig this record company spiel: "Raymond v Raymond takes you on a journey through the dichotomy of man." That promo shtick is more interesting than anything in the previews of the actual album.

New CD Album Releases, 2-23-2010: Mose Allison, Chuck Berry, Snoop Dogg, Hall & Oates The most interesting proposition this week is Chuck Berry Have Mercy: His Complete Chess Recordings (1969-1974). These four CDs include 71 recordings made back home at Chess after several years at Mercury. His first record back was the classic "Tulane" and this includes his only full fledged #1 single, "My Ding-a-Ling."
Mose Allison - author of such classics as "The Summertime Blues" - is back this week with The Way of the World - his first album in 12 years. What I've heard sounds pretty groovy.
More Malice is a supplemental soundtrack follow up to Snoop Dogg's movie Malice N Wonderland. It contains five new songs, besides various remixes and whatnot.

"Mr President, I smell a big fat commie rat." -General Buck Turgidson
I don't necessarily so much mind an avowed socialist or communist. If they pretty much say what they're really for, then you've got some basis of discussion of your differences or of an honest public debate.
Then there is lying, dishonest crap like this Coffee Party coming up out of the Facebook swamps. See, they're not left or right or center:
Coffee Party USA's blogRead more FAQ: Is the Coffee Party USA liberal, centrist, progressive or conservative? Tue, 2010-03-16 10:15 — Coffee Party USA Coffee Party USA is not liberal, centrist, progressive, or conservative. In fact, we question the validity of these labels because they create the illusion of division among the American people, and obscure the real problem in our politics today: the disproportionate and corrupting influence of corporate and other special interest in our government.
That's just meaningless boilerplate. The meat will be the list of who is an evil special interest and who is "we the people."
The group nominally has basically no ideological tenants, but in fact is pretty obviously a cheesy little leftist progressive move to try to backhandedly discredit the broad and more or less by default right wing backlash to the Obama Democrats huge socialist power grabs. This has been most manifest in the "tea party" groups, which have a diverse range of attendees, but are united in opposition to the recent expanses in government power and spending.
The whole point of the coffee parties is that they are civil and friendly, unlike those crazy unhinged angry white males at the tea parties. But this is ultimately obviously just a trick to intimidate any real opposition or to charm them into thinking that it is inappropriate to raise hell. "Shh now - co-operate" as Yen Lo said to Raymond Shaw's victim as he strangled him.
It's just rude and un-American to raise hell. Just sit still and be quiet as the progressives rape the constitutional processes to get their way in taking over a huge portion of the American economy against the wishes of the American people and clearly without sufficient votes to legitimately pass it. Better to let the fascist eggheads ruin the country than to have some idiots decide that you're mean and uncivil.
But let me stop momentarily in the midst of my uncivil (but very satisfying) ranting to give fairness to Obama and the Democrats. I have called the Obama plans "commie" and "pinko." That's really not quite right. Basically communists want the people ie the government ie them to own the means of production. Mostly, the Obama plan is for heavily regulated and subsidized private firms to act as the middlemen in imsplementing their schemes. Properly, that should be called "fascism" rather than "communism." It's just hyperbole when I call Obama a communist. "Fascist" would be rather more precise.
Then there are the usual collaborators. All the big time pinko journalistic outlets like the New York times and such like to go along with the pretense that these coffee parties really are non-partisan groups devoted really just to good government.
Then there are seemingly endless useful idiots who talk themselves into thinking that these Coffee Party groups really are just devoted to civility. Worse perhaps than the obviously consciously dishonest people who came up with this dumb "movement" are these ignorant dupes.
I'm particularly amused to see the official front page of the Coffee Party website touting the participation of a former Ron Paul volunteer. Speaking of idiots. But also the Paul-bots were some of the most hostile, accusatory and outright uncivil participants in the 2008 campaigns. The only ones worse were maybe some of the Obama brownshirts, especially in Chicago. The Paul-bots were not just absolutely physically beating people up. Or send a naked Rahm Emanuel after you.
Anyhow, here's the basic point: If you can't stand the sight of elbows being thrown and a few jaws being punched, stay the hell out of politics. Basically, we go for a lot of fussin' and cussin' instead of a bunch of shooting and killing to sort out our big issues. That's pretty genteel when you think about it.
And also if you're going to be a pinko/fascist front group, be honest about it. It will increase your credibility.
New CD Album Releases, 3-16-2010: The White Stripes, Graham Parker We interrupt your usual weekly album update column with this urgent communique from Generalissimo Alberto Barger of the White Stripes Nation Revolutionary Council:
Patriots and comrades, we have another communique from our Dear Leader and El Presidente for Life Jack White. He and Queen Meg spent a good part of 2007 campaigning for victory up North in Canada, playing largely in far flung small towns who had never been exposed to the teachings of Jesus or the White Stripes Nation.
These have now been released as an album communique Under Great White Northern Lights so that all the troops of Jack White and the Seven Nation Army can be heard by all who have ears to listen. The Celtic sounds of Icky Thump have been spread through to other songs in these arrangements, notably the "Little Ghosts."
While these performances make for a very good CD, you would most likely be wanting to order the DVD of these groovy concerts so that you can look and see and properly feel the groundswell of support for the upcoming revolution in which the failed fascism of the Obama regime is swept aside in favor a true leader of the people.
Viva la revolucion!!!
