Nature notes
Ladybirds are little beetles that spent the winter in a dormant state, often in houses, and now have come out everywhere again. There are many British species, but the two most common by far are bright red ones with black spots on their back. They are called the two-spot ladybird and the seven-spot ladybird, and their names indicate the number of spots they have. They can open the casing on their back along the middle, tiny wings come out, and then they can fly away, back home if necessary. They feed on aphids, which feed on plants, so ladybirds do good in gardens. Ten years or so ago a new species invaded Britain — the harlequin ladybird. It is a large insect and is spreading, and could become a dangerous rival for food to the others. Two forms are most often seen: one is orange with 15-21 black spots, the other is black with a few red spots. Sightings of these can be reported to www.ladybird-survey.org.
