Things which are free are provided without cost or obligation. However, there are certain aphorisms which might be wise to heed when dealing with things which are offered for free. One of these is "you get what you pay for," which often applies to the value of items which come with no charge and correspondingly are of little worth. Another is "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch," which implies that it is often true that things presented as free end up having hidden costs.

To be free is also a state of being without restraints or obligations which all human beings aspire to. Romantic philosopher and author Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote in The Social Contract "man is born free, yet everywhere he is in chains" and proposed that the natural state of man is freedom, echoing the thoughts of pre-romantic poet John Dryden who wrote in The Conquest of Granada:

I am as free as Nature first made man,
Ere the base laws of servitude began,
When wild in woods the noble savage ran.
