Today on Appetite for Distraction: Overtime

Posted by Lisa Christiansen at 4:45 PM

One of the stranger soccer world cup observations I heard came this morning on the CBC Radio 1 show Q. I didn't catch the name of Jian Ghomeshi's guest, but he was in South Africa for the final game and quipped that the dullness of the match didn't do much to gain American fans.

I watched bits of the game and did not find it any more or less boring than any other soccer game. But I guess if you equate scoring with excitement, it failed. But then again the sporting industry has all interests covered. On another channel I watched live truck racing – the Lucas Oil 200 at Iowa Speedway. Rookie Austin Dillon scored his first win. Along the way there were lots of crashes, jumps and even a truck in flames! So if the beautiful game (seriously, how many times has that been said in the past month!?) got kinda ugly, all you had to do was click.

Boring is in the eye of the beholder, I think. I've always found grown men running/skating/jumping/driving for prizes to be rather uninteresting anyway. Now thinking and creating – that's for me.
